Chapter 1 – The Camera Never Blinked

The ambulance arrived just as the ballroom doors were locked by hotel security.
A paramedic gently examined Sophie while pressing a clean bandage against the cut on her forehead.
"She's going to need stitches," he said. "But she's awake. That's a very good sign."
Only then did I finally breathe.
Behind me, Preston was already rebuilding his performance.
"You all saw it," he shouted. "The phone was in her jacket!"
Several guests nodded uncertainly.
My father adjusted his tie.
"The matter is unfortunate," he announced. "But I believe our family can settle this privately."
The hotel's general manager stepped forward.
"I'm afraid that won't be possible."
He held a tablet in his hands.
"Our security office has already preserved the ballroom footage."
Preston's confidence cracked.
"There must be some mistake."
"There isn't."
The manager tapped the screen.
Every television in the ballroom switched from the wedding slideshow to the surveillance recording.
The timestamp read 7:42 PM.
Guests watched Preston casually approach the children's table while everyone was focused on the bride and groom's first dance.
He looked around once.
Twice.
Then quietly slipped his titanium phone into Sophie’s tiny denim jacket.
He smiled.
Walked away.
Returned exactly three minutes later.
Then loudly announced the phone was missing.
No one breathed.
The silence lasted almost thirty seconds.
Finally, someone whispered,
"My God..."
Another guest stood up.
"He framed his own niece."
Then another voice.
"And he hit her to protect the lie."
May you like
The applause that had filled the ballroom only minutes earlier was replaced by something Preston had never experienced.
Complete silence.
