Chapter 3 – The Price of Being the Golden Child

The trial began four months later.

The prosecution barely needed witnesses.

The surveillance video told the story with brutal clarity.

Frame by frame.

Preston planting the phone.

Pretending to search.

Striking Sophie with the heavy oak menu board.

Then something unexpected happened.

My father requested permission to testify.

Everyone assumed he would defend his son.

Instead, seventy-year-old Richard Bennett stood before the jury with tears in his eyes.

"I failed both of my children."

The courtroom became perfectly still.

"I spent thirty years confusing love with protection."

"I believed saving my son from consequences made me a good father."

"It made him dangerous."

My mother lowered her head for the first time.

Richard turned toward me.

"Evelyn..."

"I'm sorry."

"I should have believed you the first time."

It was the apology I had waited my entire life to hear.

It didn't erase the past.

But it ended the lies.

The jury convicted Preston of aggravated assault on a child, filing a false police report, evidence tampering, and child endangerment.

As deputies placed handcuffs on him, he looked toward our parents.

"You're supposed to fix this."

Neither of them moved.

No one rescued him.
