Chapter 1 - The Chain on the Porch

My daughter turned five on a Saturday afternoon that smelled like vanilla frosting, cut grass, and summer rain.
By the time I pulled into my mother-in-law’s driveway, the party had already started.
Pink balloons floated above the porch.
Children ran through the backyard.
Music drifted through the open windows.
For one second, everything looked exactly like the birthday party I had spent three weeks planning.
Then I heard Maisie crying.
Not the dramatic cry she used when she dropped a cookie.
Not the frustrated cry she made when bedtime came too early.
This was different.
It was quiet.
Broken.
Terrified.
“Mommy.”
I followed the sound around the side of the house.
My handbag slipped from my shoulder.
There she was.
My five-year-old daughter was sitting beside the porch post in her yellow birthday dress.
A metal chain had been looped around the wooden post.
The other end was secured around her ankle over her sock.
She had tear marks down both cheeks.
Her birthday crown lay crushed in the dirt.
For several seconds, my body simply refused to move.
“Maisie.”
Her head snapped up.
“Mommy!”
I ran to her.
“Who did this?”
She pointed toward the house.
“Grandma said I had to stay outside.”
My hands shook as I reached for the lock.
It required a key.
I looked through the kitchen window.
Inside, my husband Daniel stood beside the birthday cake while his mother Judith laughed with relatives.
They were singing.
They were celebrating my daughter’s birthday while my daughter sat chained outside.
I pounded on the glass.
Daniel turned.
His smile disappeared.
Judith’s did not.
She walked outside slowly.
She held the little silver key between two fingers.
“What the hell did you do?” I demanded.
Judith looked at Maisie, then at me.
Her expression was frighteningly calm.
“That child doesn’t belong here.”
Daniel appeared behind her.
“Mom, give Claire the key.”
Judith ignored him.
I stepped closer.
“Unlock my daughter.”
“She isn’t a Mercer.”
My stomach dropped.
“What?”
Judith finally opened the lock.
I pulled the chain away and lifted Maisie into my arms.
She buried her face against my neck.
Judith folded her arms.
“I’ve watched that child for five years.”
“You chained a five-year-old to a post.”
“I made sure she couldn’t ruin the party.”
“It was her party!”
Judith’s eyes hardened.
“Maybe you should tell Daniel the truth about whose daughter she really is.”
The backyard went silent.
Daniel stared at me.
“Claire?”
I could barely believe what I was hearing.
“You think I cheated on you?”
Judith smiled.
“I don’t think it.”
“I know it.”
I turned to Daniel.
“Say something.”
He looked at Maisie.
Then at me.
And what he said next hurt almost as much as finding the chain.
“Maybe we should take a DNA test.”
That was the moment I realized the chain around my daughter’s ankle was only the beginning.
Because Judith had not invented her accusation that morning.
May you like
She had been preparing for this for months.
And hidden inside her bedroom was a forty-year-old secret she was willing to destroy all of us to protect.
