Chapter 11 - The Signature from Six Years Ago

The signature belonged to Judith.
Daniel stared at the document in the attorney’s office.
It transferred disputed Vale assets into the Mercer Family Preservation Trust.
“Why would she do this?” Evelyn asked.
The attorney adjusted his glasses.
“To prevent a future heir from challenging ownership.”
Daniel looked sick.
“She knew.”
“Apparently.”
“She knew Thomas’s heirs could make a claim.”
“Yes.”
“And she moved the assets anyway.”
“Yes.”
The attorney turned another page.
“There’s more.”
I almost laughed.
There was always more.
Six years earlier, Judith had hired a private investigator.
The investigator had located Margaret and Caleb in Oregon.
She had also found Evelyn.
Daniel leaned back.
“So Mom knew where Thomas’s family was.”
The attorney nodded.
“She chose not to contact them.”
Evelyn’s face hardened.
“What did she do instead?”
The answer came in the form of payments.
Judith had paid the investigator to monitor all three Vale heirs.
Including Daniel.
My husband stared at the surveillance photographs.
His office.
Our house.
Maisie’s preschool.
My stomach turned.
“She had someone photographing my daughter?”
The attorney nodded grimly.
Daniel pushed back from the table.
“That’s it.”
He called Judith.
She answered immediately.
“Daniel.”
“You hired someone to follow my child.”
Silence.
“I was protecting you.”
“Stop saying that.”
“I needed to know whether Evelyn or Caleb would ever discover the truth.”
“So you knew Caleb existed.”
“Yes.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“How long?”
“Six years.”
“You let me spend six years believing I had no siblings.”
“I did what Richard would have wanted.”
“Dad recorded a confession because he was ashamed of what he did.”
Judith’s voice changed.
“You found that?”
“Yes.”
“Give it to me.”
“No.”
“Daniel.”
“No.”
He hung up.
Then something happened I had not expected.
He started crying.
Not dramatically.
Not loudly.
He simply sat there with his face in his hands while forty years collapsed around him.
I remembered the man at the birthday party who had asked me for a DNA test.
I was still angry with him.
I still did not trust him with my heart.
But for the first time, I understood that Judith had spent his entire life training him to doubt everyone except her.
That did not excuse him.
But it explained him.
Two days later, Judith was charged with misdemeanor child endangerment related to Maisie’s restraint.
Her attorney called it an unfortunate misunderstanding.
Then Evelyn’s attorney filed a civil fraud claim against the Mercer Family Trust.
The board suspended Daniel as chairman pending investigation.
Our marriage was breaking.
His company was collapsing.
Judith was facing court.
And Maisie had started waking up at night asking whether Grandma was coming to take her outside again.
I thought we had reached the worst point.
Then the police detective assigned to Judith’s case called me.
“We found something during a lawful search of Mrs. Mercer’s home.”
“What?”
“A letter.”
“From Thomas?”
“No.”
“From Richard?”
“No.”
The detective paused.
“It was written by Arthur Mercer.”
My hand tightened around the phone.
May you like
“What does it say?”
“He admits what happened the night Thomas Vale disappeared.”
