Chapter 17 - The Birthday Crown

Three months after the party, I found the crushed birthday crown in the trunk of my car.
I had forgotten putting it there.
The paper was bent.
One plastic jewel was missing.
I sat in the driveway holding it until Daniel pulled up to return Maisie after lunch.
He saw the crown.
His face changed.
“I remember that.”
“So do I.”
Maisie ran inside to show my sister a toy.
Daniel stayed outside.
“I’m sorry, Claire.”
“You’ve said that.”
“I know.”
“But?”
“I don’t think I understood what I was apologizing for before.”
I waited.
“I thought I was apologizing for believing Mom.”
He looked at the crown.
“I was really apologizing for making you prove something you never should have had to prove.”
That was closer.
“And for making Maisie’s place in this family conditional.”
Closer still.
“I loved her when I thought she was mine.”
He swallowed.
“I should have loved her exactly the same way even before the test.”
I looked at him.
“Yes.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
There was no grand romantic reconciliation.
No dramatic kiss.
Trust does not return because somebody finally says the right sentence.
Daniel moved into an apartment.
We started counseling.
Not to save the marriage at any cost.
To determine whether the marriage deserved saving.
Some weeks were hopeful.
Others were terrible.
Daniel learned that apologizing did not mean I had to stop being angry.
I learned that accountability and cruelty were not the same thing.
Maisie learned that Daddy lived somewhere else but still came when he promised.
That mattered most.
One afternoon, Evelyn invited us to the old Mercer-Vale mill.
The company had purchased the abandoned property back from a developer.
She planned to restore Workshop Three.
Not as an executive office.
As an archive telling the real history of the company.
Thomas Vale’s name would be placed beside Richard Mercer’s.
Not beneath it.
Beside it.
Caleb donated Thomas’s tools.
Daniel donated Richard’s confession.
I donated nothing.
Then Maisie tugged my hand.
“Mommy?”
“Yes?”
“Can I put something there?”
She held the repaired birthday crown.
I stared at her.
“Why?”
“Because that’s when everybody found out the truth.”
Daniel looked away.
Evelyn knelt beside her.
“What truth did you find out?”
Maisie thought carefully.
Then she smiled.
“That I belong.”
Nobody spoke for a moment.
Evelyn blinked back tears.
“Yeah, kid.”
May you like
She touched the crown gently.
“You do.”
