Chapter 11 - THE HEIR

Emma listened to the recording in the secure apartment.
Vanessa and Margaret discussed Daniel’s death as though they were planning a dinner.
The plan had been simple.
Daniel would die in a boating accident during the family’s annual lake retreat.
Emma would inherit his voting shares.
Then the forged medical records would be released.
A court would declare Emma unfit.
Margaret would seek guardianship of the baby and temporary control of the shares.
Charles would be blamed for the foundation fraud.
Vanessa would become the public face of the family companies.
Emma placed both hands over her belly.
“They never saw this baby as a child.”
“To them, the baby was ownership.”
Cole paused the recording.
“There is more.”
Daniel’s voice came through another file.
But the words were edited.
Separate statements had been cut together to make it sound as though he agreed to remove Emma.
Daniel insisted the recording was false.
Forensic specialists confirmed multiple cuts.
Emma believed that part.
Still, hearing his voice beside Vanessa’s made her uneasy.
Cole closed the laptop.
“We are issuing warrants for Vanessa and Margaret.”
“What about Charles?”
“Grant’s testimony connects him to Thomas Bell’s death.”
“The recovered banking records connect him to the foundation accounts.”
“He will be arrested separately.”
Emma looked toward the windows.
“What will they do before the warrants arrive?”
“Run.”
At Whitmore Manor, Margaret entered Vanessa’s room and locked the door.
“You kept recordings?”
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“I kept protection.”
“You nearly burned us all.”
“You were supposed to destroy Emma’s credibility months ago.”
Margaret slapped her.
Vanessa’s head turned.
For a moment, neither woman spoke.
Then Vanessa laughed.
“You are angry because I learned from you.”
Margaret’s face tightened.
“The police are coming.”
“There is a plane waiting at the private airfield.”
“What about your father?”
“He will keep them occupied.”
Vanessa picked up a passport.
“And Daniel?”
“He made his choice.”
Margaret looked toward the hallway.
“He is still my son.”
“No.”
“He is Emma’s husband.”
“There is a difference.”
They left through a hidden service passage built during the mansion’s renovation.
However, Daniel had already told Cole about the passage.
Police were waiting at the outer gate.
Margaret saw them first.
She stopped.
Vanessa grabbed her arm.
“Keep walking.”
Officers stepped forward.
“Vanessa Whitmore and Margaret Whitmore, you are under arrest.”
Margaret raised her hands.
Vanessa did not.
She pushed her mother toward the officers and ran into the gardens.
Park chased her through the hedges.
Vanessa reached a stone wall and climbed.
The white suit tore at the shoulder.
She dropped to the other side and disappeared into the wooded property beyond.
Police dogs followed her trail to a service road.
There they found tire tracks and a discarded phone.
Vanessa had escaped.
Inside the abandoned phone was one unsent message addressed to Emma.
