Chapter 9 - WESTHAVEN
Daniel pulled his shirt over his mouth.
The smoke was thick but smelled artificial.
A distraction.
Through his earpiece, Cole’s voice remained steady.
“Daniel, move toward the east corridor.”
“We have your location.”
Daniel found the corridor blocked by a chain.
He kicked the lower section of the door until the old frame cracked.
Behind it, he discovered a treatment room.
Rosa’s son, Mateo, was tied to a chair.
He was conscious but terrified.
Daniel rushed toward him.
“It is all right.”
“The police are outside.”
Mateo shook his head violently.
“She said the doors would lock.”
“Who?”
“A woman speaking through the cameras.”
“Vanessa?”
“I never saw her face.”
Daniel freed Mateo’s wrists.
A buzzing sound came from the ceiling.
Daniel looked up and saw a camera turning toward them.
“Vanessa,” he shouted.
“You lost.”
Her voice came through the speaker.
“No, Daniel.”
“You did.”
A timer appeared on a wall-mounted screen.
Three minutes.
Cole heard everything.
“All units move in.”
Officers broke through the front entrance.
Park led another team through the loading dock.
Daniel guided Mateo toward the east stairwell.
The main door would not open.
The countdown continued.
Two minutes.
Mateo pointed toward a maintenance hatch.
“My father repairs buildings.”
“There might be a manual release.”
Daniel pulled the hatch open.
Inside, he found a red lever.
He pulled it.
The stairwell door unlocked.
They ran outside as officers entered from the opposite side.
The timer reached zero.
Nothing exploded.
Instead, every computer in the building began wiping its hard drives.
“She was destroying evidence,” Cole said.
Investigators disconnected the system before the process finished.
They recovered fragments of video files.
One showed Grant Mercer bringing Mateo into the building.
Another showed a second person entering through a side door.
The person wore a hood, but a silver bracelet flashed beneath the sleeve.
Daniel recognized it.
Their mother had given matching bracelets to Vanessa and herself years earlier.
Vanessa’s bracelet had three emerald stones.
Margaret’s had three diamonds.
The video showed diamonds.
Daniel stared at the frozen frame.
“My mother helped kidnap him.”
Cole nodded.
“Or she wants us to think she did.”
Mateo was reunited with Rosa outside.
She held him so tightly that neither could speak.
Daniel stood several feet away.
His clothes were covered in dust.
Emma called him.
“Are you safe?”
“Yes.”
“And Mateo?”
“He is with Rosa.”
Emma released a breath.
Daniel looked toward the dark building.
“My mother was involved.”
“I am sorry.”
“I spent my entire life believing she was the gentle one.”
“She watched Vanessa push you.”
“She stood beside you on the floor and still chose Vanessa.”
Emma’s voice became quiet.
“She made her choice long before tonight.”
Behind Daniel, an investigator shouted.
A hidden safe had been discovered beneath the building’s pharmacy counter.
Inside were forged medical files bearing Emma’s name.
The files claimed she had suffered violent episodes, addiction problems, and delusions.
Every report carried the signature of a respected Whitmore family doctor.
Cole read the documents.
“This is what they planned to use in court.”
Daniel looked at the dates.
The earliest report had been created seven months before Emma became pregnant.
