Chapter 16 - EMMA’S SECRET

Vanessa’s accusation followed Emma back to the secure apartment.
Daniel did not confront her immediately.
He waited until Cole finished taking statements.
Then he stood near the doorway.
“Did you give Thomas the password?”
Emma sat on the couch.
“Yes.”
Daniel absorbed the answer.
“Why?”
“Because Thomas believed money was being stolen.”
“He needed access to the internal records.”
“That password belonged to my office.”
“I know.”
“You entered my account without telling me.”
“Yes.”
Daniel looked away.
Emma did not defend herself.
She had known this moment would come.
Six months earlier, Thomas Bell had contacted her in secret.
He said Daniel’s signature appeared on illegal transfers.
Emma believed Daniel was being framed, but she could not prove it.
She gave Thomas temporary access to Daniel’s financial portal.
Thomas downloaded records showing that Charles and Vanessa were routing donations through shell companies.
Two days later, he died.
“I thought I caused his death,” Emma said.
“You did not.”
“I gave him access.”
“Vanessa and my father chose what happened next.”
Daniel sat across from her.
“Why did you keep this from the police?”
“I did not.”
“Cole knew?”
“Yes.”
Daniel’s expression tightened.
“But you did not tell me.”
“You were still reporting every concern I raised to your father.”
“I was trying to resolve family disagreements.”
“You were warning the people I was investigating.”
Daniel had no answer.
Emma continued.
“I could not trust you.”
“Vanessa wanted that sentence to hurt you.”
“But it is still true.”
Daniel looked toward her belly.
“I want to become someone you can trust.”
“That is not a promise you make once.”
“It is something you prove for years.”
“I understand.”
Emma studied him.
“Do you?”
Daniel took a document from his coat.
It was a legal agreement transferring his voting shares into an independent trust.
The trust would be managed by an outside board until the criminal investigation ended.
Neither Daniel nor his family could access it.
“I signed this today.”
Emma read the document.
“You are giving up control of the company.”
“I am removing the weapon my family tried to use.”
“The baby will not inherit those shares automatically.”
“Margaret cannot seek control through guardianship.”
Emma looked up.
“Your father will hate you.”
“My father tried to frame me for theft.”
“My mother planned my death.”
“My sister tried to take my child.”
“I am finished living for their approval.”
Emma handed the document back.
“This is the right decision.”
“But it does not decide what happens to our marriage.”
“I know.”
Cole entered with new information.
The police had traced the stolen foundation funds.
Most were still recoverable.
However, one account contained regular payments to a private investigator.
The investigator had followed Emma for nearly a year.
He had photographed her meetings, copied her medical appointments, and entered her apartment while she was away.
His final assignment had been scheduled for the day after the gala.
The instructions were short.
Create evidence that Emma planned to leave the country with the baby.
Daniel read the document.
“They were preparing another lie.”
Cole nodded.
“Vanessa wanted the court to believe Emma was a flight risk.”
“Then Margaret could request emergency custody.”
Emma felt exhausted.
Every part of her life had been watched and manipulated.
Cole placed another file on the table.
“But this investigator saved everything.”
“He believed Vanessa might refuse to pay him.”
“His records connect her directly to the forged medical files, the planted pills, and the kidnapping.”
“Will he testify?”
“He already agreed.”
Emma leaned back.
For the first time, Vanessa’s threat no longer felt endless.

The lies were collapsing.
One witness at a time.
