Chapter 11 - THE HIDDEN ACCOUNT

Graham’s disappearance lasted three days.

During that time, federal agents froze his known accounts.

Hartwell Global canceled every contract connected to Mercer Development.

Banks demanded immediate repayment on hundreds of millions of dollars in loans.

Investors filed lawsuits before the markets opened Monday morning.

Graham’s empire began collapsing exactly as Evelyn had once warned it would.

Yet one account remained active.

It was registered under the name Larkspur Advisory.

Transactions from Larkspur led to private investigators, data brokers, medical consultants, and a public relations firm.

For two years, Graham had paid people to monitor the Hartwell family.

He collected Daniel’s travel schedule.

He obtained Margaret’s private emails.

He tracked Claire’s meetings.

He purchased Evelyn’s phone records.

He also paid a woman named Vanessa Cole.

Evelyn recognized the name.

Vanessa had been her home nurse during the first four months after the crash.

She had resigned without warning.

Investigators located her in Philadelphia.

At first, Vanessa denied everything.

Then Claire showed her the payments.

Vanessa’s face collapsed.

“Graham said he needed to know whether Evelyn was following medical instructions.”

“What did you report?” Claire asked.

“Everything.”

“Her calls?”

“Yes.”

“Her visitors?”

“Yes.”

“Her physical progress?”

Vanessa looked down.

“Yes.”

Evelyn watched through the video connection.

“What did you tell him about my progress?”

Vanessa looked toward the camera.

“That you were improving faster than expected.”

“When?”

“About three months after the crash.”

Evelyn remembered that period.

She had begun regaining strength in her right leg.

Then her fatigue worsened.

Her balance declined.

Graham told her recovery was unpredictable.

“What did Graham do after your report?”

“He changed your medication schedule.”

“Did you question him?”

“He said Dr. Redmond approved it.”

“Did he?”

“I never spoke to Dr. Redmond.”

Vanessa admitted that Graham had ordered her to discourage Evelyn from practicing transfers without him.

He wanted her dependent.

He wanted every improvement to pass through his control.

“He asked me to record you,” Vanessa said.

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

“Where are the recordings?”

“I deleted them.”

Claire leaned forward.

“All of them?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“I kept one.”

“Why?”

“Because it frightened me.”

The recording showed Evelyn in the penthouse therapy room.

She was practicing standing between parallel bars.

Graham entered unexpectedly.

Instead of encouraging her, he became angry.

“You told me you were resting,” he said.

“I wanted to practice.”

“You could fall.”

“My therapist is here.”

Graham ordered the therapist to leave.

The therapist refused.

Graham threatened to cancel Hartwell’s contract with the rehabilitation company.

The therapist eventually left.

Then Graham stood in front of Evelyn.

His voice became quiet.

“You are trying to prove you do not need me.”

“I am trying to recover.”

“Those are not the same thing.”

“They should be.”

Graham reached toward her medication bottle.

“You are tired.”

“I am not.”

“You will be.”

The recording ended.

Evelyn stared at the dark screen.

Vanessa began crying.

“I knew something was wrong.”

“But you kept reporting to him,” Evelyn said.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He paid me.”

Evelyn’s expression remained unreadable.

“Everyone has a reason.”

Vanessa looked at her.

“That does not make it right.”

“No.”

Evelyn turned toward Claire.

“Send the recording to investigators.”

Vanessa wiped her face.

“Will you testify against me?”

Evelyn answered honestly.

“If they ask me what happened, I will tell the truth.”

Vanessa nodded.

Before the call ended, she provided the password to the Larkspur account.

Investigators discovered a scheduled payment for five million dollars.

The recipient was Martin Keene.

The transfer was set to occur in twelve hours.

The destination account was located in the Cayman Islands.

Federal agents began tracing it.

Evelyn studied the transaction.

Graham was still communicating with Martin.

He was still moving money.

He was still close enough to believe he could win.

“Do not block the transfer yet,” Evelyn said.

Claire looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because Martin will go wherever he expects to receive it.”

“And Graham?”

May you like

Evelyn’s eyes remained on the screen.

“Graham will go wherever he believes Martin can betray him.”
