Chapter 5 - GRAHAM’S VERSION

By morning, the story had reached every major news organization in New York.

Photographs from the engagement reception appeared online.

One image showed Evelyn on the marble floor.

Another showed Graham standing behind her with the document in his hand.

The headlines were careful.

HARTWELL HEIRESS INJURED AT ENGAGEMENT EVENT.

QUESTIONS SURROUND ALTERCATION AT FAMILY RECEPTION.

MERCER DENIES WRONGDOING AFTER FIANCÉE’S FALL.

At nine fifteen, Graham released a video statement.

He sat in Evelyn’s penthouse library wearing a dark suit and no tie.

The setting was deliberate.

Family photographs stood behind him.

A framed picture from Evelyn’s rehabilitation rested beside his shoulder.

He looked exhausted, wounded, and patient.

He said the reception incident had been misunderstood.

He said Evelyn had attempted to stand without assistance.

He said he had tried to catch her.

He said the document was a standard planning agreement intended to protect her.

Then his voice softened.

“Evelyn has suffered greatly since her accident.”

He looked directly into the camera.

“I love her deeply, and I will not participate in the public humiliation of a woman recovering from a serious neurological injury.”

Evelyn watched from the breakfast room at Hartwell House.

Her parents sat across from her.

Claire stood near the window.

Graham continued.

“She has experienced episodes of confusion and fear.”

Margaret rose from her chair.

Daniel placed a hand on her arm.

Graham spoke about privacy.

He spoke about compassion.

He spoke about the danger of drawing conclusions from incomplete recordings and emotional witnesses.

He never mentioned pushing the wheelchair.

He never mentioned the threat.

He never mentioned the crash.

At the end of the statement, he asked the Hartwell family to allow Evelyn to recover away from outside pressure.

The video ended.

Margaret turned toward Daniel.

“Destroy him.”

Evelyn looked at her mother.

“No.”

Margaret’s anger broke into disbelief.

“He is calling you unstable.”

“That is what he wants us to respond to.”

“He has already convinced people.”

“Then we do not answer with anger.”

Daniel understood.

“What do you suggest?”

Evelyn turned toward Claire.

“Release twenty seconds of the recording.”

“Which twenty?”

“The part where he says the document is temporary.”

Claire nodded slowly.

“Then release the page showing ten years.”

Daniel leaned back.

“You want the public to catch him in a direct lie.”

“I want him to keep talking.”

Margaret stared at her daughter.

“What if people believe him?”

“Some will.”

“What if the board believes him?”

“Some of them already do.”

The room fell quiet.

Hartwell Global had nineteen board members.

Seven had strong personal relationships with Graham.

Three had invested in Mercer Development.

Two had questioned whether Evelyn should continue leading the Hartwell Foundation after the crash.

A public battle over her mental competence could divide the company.

That was exactly what Graham intended.

Claire’s phone vibrated.

She read the message and looked at Evelyn.

“The laboratory has preliminary results.”

Everyone waited.

“The capsules from the penthouse contained your prescribed nerve medication.”

Margaret released a breath.

Claire was not finished.

“They also contained a second drug.”

“What kind?” Daniel asked.

“A short-acting sedative.”

Evelyn’s mouth went dry.

“Was it dangerous?”

“In the amount found, it could cause fatigue, confusion, memory problems, and slowed coordination.”

Margaret gripped the edge of the table.

“Could it have caused the crash?”

“We would need the original blood samples.”

Daniel was already reaching for his phone.

Claire stopped him.

“There is another problem.”

“What?”

“The drug is difficult to detect after several hours.”

Evelyn looked toward the dark television screen.

On it, she could still see the faint reflection of Graham’s empty chair.

“He knew exactly what he was doing.”

Claire nodded.

“Yes.”

A security officer appeared in the doorway.

“Ms. Hartwell, a package was delivered for you.”

“From whom?”

“There is no name.”

The officer placed a narrow white box on the table.

Inside was Evelyn’s engagement ring.

Beneath it lay a handwritten note.

You are not the only one who can record a conversation.

Daniel read the sentence aloud.

Margaret looked toward the windows.

Claire immediately ordered the security team to search the house for listening devices.

Evelyn lifted the ring from the box.

For months, Graham had told her the diamond represented survival.

Now it looked like what it had always been.

A beautiful object designed to keep her attention away from the cage beneath it.
