Chapter 8 - THE BOARD DIVIDES

Hartwell Global scheduled an emergency board meeting for Friday morning.

The meeting was supposed to address Graham’s suspension and Martin Keene’s financial access.

By Thursday night, it had become a battle over Evelyn.

Seven board members signed a petition requesting an independent evaluation of her mental capacity.

The petition cited Dr. Redmond’s medical notes.

It also cited “recent emotional instability” at the engagement reception.

Graham had not simply prepared to control Evelyn.

He had prepared to remove her.

The meeting took place on the eighty-second floor of Hartwell Tower.

Evelyn entered through the main boardroom doors.

She wore a dark blue suit and no engagement ring.

Claire walked beside her.

Daniel and Margaret followed.

Every board member stood except Graham’s supporters.

Martin Keene’s chair remained empty.

He had disappeared after receiving notice that his access was suspended.

Graham attended through video conference from his attorney’s office.

His face appeared on the large screen at the far end of the room.

For one moment, he looked at Evelyn without speaking.

Then he smiled.

“Evie.”

“Do not call me that.”

The smile faded.

Board chairman Thomas Bell opened the meeting.

The first motion proposed suspending Graham from all Hartwell properties and projects.

It passed twelve votes to seven.

The second motion proposed terminating Martin Keene.

It passed unanimously.

Then board member Richard Dalton introduced the petition concerning Evelyn.

“This is not punishment,” Dalton said.

“It is protection for the company and Ms. Hartwell.”

Evelyn placed both hands on the table.

“Protection from what?”

“From decisions made during a vulnerable period.”

“Name one damaging decision I have made.”

Dalton glanced at the other board members.

“You opposed the Mercer acquisition.”

“The company was insolvent.”

“We had not completed due diligence.”

“I had.”

“You relied on incomplete information.”

Evelyn nodded toward Claire.

A screen changed behind her.

Financial statements appeared.

Mercer Development carried more than nine hundred million dollars in undisclosed debt.

Three major properties were tied to fraudulent loan guarantees.

The acquisition would have transferred those liabilities to Hartwell Global.

Several board members leaned forward.

Dalton looked toward Graham’s image.

Graham remained expressionless.

Evelyn continued.

“I rejected a transaction that would have cost this company more than one billion dollars.”

No one interrupted.

“If that is your example of impaired judgment, I suggest you reconsider your definition.”

Thomas Bell cleared his throat.

“The medical records remain a concern.”

Claire distributed copies of Natalie Price’s evidence.

She explained the fabricated appointments, altered server entries, and payments from Graham’s company to Dr. Redmond.

Graham’s attorney objected.

“This material has not been authenticated.”

“It has,” Claire said.

“Independent digital examiners confirmed the server logs this morning.”

Graham leaned toward his camera.

“Evelyn, your family is using you.”

Evelyn looked at the screen.

“No.”

“They are turning a personal misunderstanding into a corporate war.”

“You created the war.”

“I tried to protect you.”

“You drugged me.”

Several board members reacted.

Graham’s attorney whispered urgently.

Graham ignored him.

“That accusation is insane.”

Evelyn did not raise her voice.

“The capsules from my home contained an unprescribed sedative.”

“I managed your medication according to your doctor’s instructions.”

“Then you admit you handled it.”

Graham stopped.

His attorney covered the microphone.

The screen went silent.

Claire leaned toward Evelyn.

“He just placed himself in the chain of custody.”

Evelyn watched Graham argue with his attorney.

For years, he had controlled every conversation by staying calm while others became emotional.

Now the room was quiet.

He was the only one losing control.

The board voted on the mental capacity evaluation.

Nine supported it.

Ten opposed it.

The motion failed by one vote.

Graham returned to the screen.

His face had changed.

The patience was gone.

“You think this is victory?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“No.”

She closed the folder in front of her.

“This is the beginning.”
