Chapter 19 - The Choice Nobody Expected
Luca shocked everyone at the next board meeting.
He did not fight to keep every piece of the empire.
He sold half of it.
The eastern docks.
Three logistics companies.
Two casinos.
Several properties that had generated more trouble than loyalty.
Men who had known Luca for twenty years stared at him like he had lost his mind.
Dominic had spent twelve years poisoning Luca to inherit an empire.
Luca dismantled parts of it voluntarily.
Rebecca asked if he was certain.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Maya shouldn’t inherit a war.”
He created a legitimate family trust protected from company operations.
He funded education programs.
He converted Caterina’s old foundation into an independent organization for families affected by medical fraud and abuse of guardianship.
For the first time, the Costello name began separating itself from fear.
The decision cost Luca hundreds of millions of dollars.
Elena heard about it from Rebecca.
“You didn’t tell me.”
“You asked me to be honest when it cost me something.”
“I didn’t ask you to burn down your entire life.”
“I’m not.”
Luca looked toward Maya and Tommy playing baseball.
“I’m keeping the parts worth living in.”
The Reyes estate was eventually released from Dominic’s transfer after investigators proved the documents were fraudulent.
The hedge remained.
Luca ordered the gardeners never to repair the gap.
Then came his final court appearance.
Dominic stood across the room in a dark suit.
He looked smaller without the organization surrounding him.
Before proceedings began, he leaned toward Luca.
“You think a little girl made you good?”
Luca looked at him.
“No.”
Dominic waited.
“She made me realize I still had a choice.”
Dominic laughed.
“Same thing.”
“No.”
Luca placed both hands on the walker.
Then he stood.
Slowly.
Painfully.
Without assistance.
The courtroom fell silent.
Dominic stared.
Luca remained standing long enough to look his cousin directly in the eye.
“You stole twelve years.”
His voice was quiet.
“You don’t get the rest.”
Then Luca turned away.
