Chapter 5 - The Trust Nobody Remembered

Luca called his attorney, Rebecca Shaw, before sunrise.
Rebecca had represented the Costello family for twenty-three years.
She arrived carrying two locked briefcases and an expression that suggested she had not slept after Luca’s call.
“There’s something you need to see.”
“That sentence has become very unpopular in this house.”
Rebecca placed a yellowed document on his desk.
It was Luca’s father’s original family trust.
Luca had seen it before.
He had not seen the amendment attached to the back.
The amendment had been executed thirteen years earlier.
One year before his collapse.
If Luca died without children, controlling shares would pass to Dominic.
If Luca had a biological child, those shares would eventually pass through Luca to that child.
Luca read the paragraph twice.
Elena read it once.
Then she sat down.
“Maya changes who owns everything.”
“Eventually,” Rebecca said.
“How much?”
Rebecca hesitated.
Luca answered.
“Enough.”
Elena looked furious.
“She is eight years old.”
“I know.”
“She doesn’t become part of some inheritance war because your family put numbers beside her name.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
Luca met her eyes.
“Yes.”
For the first time, he understood what frightened Elena most.
Not Dominic.
Not money.
Not even the Costello name.
She was terrified Maya would stop being a child and become an asset.
Rebecca opened the second briefcase.
“There’s more.”
Three weeks before Luca’s collapse, someone requested a private investigation into Elena Harper.
The investigator confirmed Elena had purchased a pregnancy test.
He had photographed her leaving a clinic.
The report had been delivered to someone inside Costello Holdings.
The recipient’s initials were D.C.
Dominic Costello.
Luca’s hands tightened.
Elena stared at the page.
“He knew before you did.”
“Yes.”
“He knew I was pregnant.”
“Yes.”
“And six weeks later you were in a wheelchair.”
No one spoke.
Maya appeared quietly in the doorway.
She had heard enough.
“What happens if I don’t want the money?”
Elena closed her eyes.
Luca looked at his daughter.
“Then you don’t take it.”
Rebecca started to speak.
Luca raised a hand.
“No trust matters more than what she wants.”
Maya walked closer.
“Then why does Dominic care?”
Because Dominic had spent twelve years living inside a future that required Maya not to exist.
Luca looked at the investigation report.
And for the first time he understood the true scale of what had happened.
The poison had not been designed merely to take his legs.
May you like
It had been designed to take his future.
