Chapter 6 - The Man Who Carried Him

Marcus Kane asked to speak privately that evening.
He closed the study door.
Then he did something Luca had never seen him do.
He apologized.
“For what?”
“The night you collapsed.”
Luca waited.
Marcus had been a junior security officer then.
He had been twenty-six and terrified of making the wrong decision around powerful men.
“I found you first.”
Luca remembered fragments.
Cold marble.
A glass breaking.
His legs refusing to respond.
“What happened?”
“I wanted to call an ambulance.”
Marcus stared at the floor.
“Dr. Vale stopped me.”
Luca’s breathing slowed.
“He said moving you could kill you.”
“So?”
“Dominic agreed with him.”
Marcus swallowed.
“They ordered me to carry you upstairs.”
Elena stood near the fireplace.
“Not to a hospital?”
“No.”
“How long?”
“Eleven hours.”
Luca’s eyes sharpened.
Eleven hours.
By the time Luca reached a hospital, Vale had already given him multiple injections and documented symptoms suggesting a vascular event.
The original diagnosis had been built before independent doctors ever examined him.
Marcus reached into his jacket.
“I kept something.”
He placed a tiny glass vial on the desk.
Luca stared at it.
“Why?”
“Because Vale told me to destroy the medical bag.”
Marcus’s face tightened.
“I destroyed the bag.”
“But you kept that.”
“I was scared.”
“You were smart.”
“No.”
Marcus finally looked at Luca.
“I was a coward for twelve years.”
Luca understood guilt.
It was heavier than anger because people often carried it willingly.
Rebecca sent the vial to an independent laboratory.
The preliminary result arrived before midnight.
The residue matched the same class of compound found in Luca’s tissue.
For the first time, they had physical evidence directly connected to the night of his collapse.
Then security called.
Someone had breached the old maintenance entrance near the baseball field.
Marcus and two guards reached the location first.
No intruder remained.
But the storage shed had been opened.
Inside, the cabinet containing twelve years of Luca’s archived medical records had been emptied.
Every file was gone.
On the floor lay one object the intruder had dropped.
A gold cuff link.
Luca recognized it instantly.
May you like
Dominic wore the pair at every Costello family wedding.
