CHAPTER 17 — The Identity Hidden From Me

CHAPTER 17 — The Identity Hidden From Me

For a few seconds, I couldn't understand the words in front of me.

The file was open.

My name was printed clearly at the top.

VIVIENNE CARTER

But underneath...

A sentence that felt like it had shattered my entire existence.

"Vivienne Carter was not born a Carter."

I stared at the page.

Then at Alexander Grant.

Then at my father.

Waiting for someone to laugh.

Waiting for someone to say it was a trick.

A lie.

Anything.

But nobody did.

"What does that mean?"

My voice was barely above a whisper.

My father looked away.

That was the answer.

The one I didn't want.

The one I feared.

"Dad."

He didn't respond.

"Look at me."

Slowly...

he did.

And I saw something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not fear for himself.

Fear of losing me.

"Tell me the truth."

My father closed his eyes.

"Vivienne..."

"No."

My voice became stronger.

"I spent my entire life defending this family."

"I defended you."

"I defended Dominic."

"I defended people who were hurting me."

"But I cannot keep living inside other people's secrets."

The room became silent.

Finally...

my father whispered:

"You're right."

Alexander watched quietly.

Almost like he had been waiting for this moment for twenty-five years.

"You deserve to know."

I turned toward him.

"Don't pretend you care about me."

His expression changed slightly.

"Your mother cared."

"That's why she died."

My anger rose.

"What did you do?"

Alexander didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he opened another file.

Inside were documents.

Birth records.

Medical records.

Adoption papers.

My hands became cold.

"No."

I stepped back.

"No, this isn't real."

My father walked toward me.

"Vivienne."

I looked at him.

"Is it true?"

Silence.

"Am I not your daughter?"

His eyes filled with pain.

"You are my daughter."

The answer came instantly.

Without hesitation.

"But..."

My heart broke.

"But what?"

He swallowed.

"Not by blood."

The world became quiet.

I felt like I was outside my own body.

Watching someone else's life collapse.

My father continued.

"Your mother and I couldn't have children."

"I didn't want anyone to know."

"So we adopted you."

I looked at the documents.

"My whole life..."

"You lied to me."

My father shook his head.

"No."

"I protected you."

I laughed sadly.

"Everyone says that."

"Every person who hides something says they're protecting me."

Alexander stepped closer.

"Your mother found out the truth about your biological family."

I looked at him.

"What biological family?"

He placed another document down.

A surname.

A name I had never seen.

Whitmore.

"Your biological father was Daniel Whitmore."

I frowned.

"Who is that?"

Alexander's expression became serious.

"The man who created the original technology that built Carter International."

My father's face changed.

"No."

Alexander looked at him.

"Yes, Richard."

"The company you spent your life protecting..."

"Was built on Daniel Whitmore's work."

I looked between them.

"So my biological father..."

"Was connected to Carter International."

Alexander nodded.

"And he was murdered."

The room went cold.

"Murdered?"

"Twenty-five years ago."

My heart raced.

"By who?"

Alexander looked at my father.

"That's the question your mother was trying to answer."

Everything connected.

The accident.

The secrets.

Victor.

My uncle.

The missing files.

My mother's investigation.

She wasn't just protecting Carter International.

She was protecting me.

Because my existence itself was connected to the biggest secret in the company.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

I asked my father.

His answer came quietly.

"Because I was afraid."

"Of what?"

"That someone would use you."

He looked at me.

"You were the last living connection to Daniel Whitmore."

"What does that mean?"

"Your biological father created something."

"Something powerful."

"Something people wanted."

Alexander smiled.

"There it is."

"The truth."

I turned toward him.

"What do you want?"

He looked surprised.

"I want justice."

I almost laughed.

"Justice?"

"You disappeared for twenty-five years."

"You watched my family fall apart."

"You let my mother die."

His expression hardened.

"I didn't kill your mother."

"Then why were you there?"

A long pause.

Then:

"Because she asked me to help her."

I froze.

"What?"

Alexander looked at my father.

"Richard never knew the whole story."

My father stared.

"What are you saying?"

"Your wife trusted me."

"She knew Victor was dangerous."

"She knew David was involved."

"But she discovered something bigger."

Alexander opened another file.

Inside was a blueprint.

A technology design.

My biological father's work.

"The company was never the real target."

He looked at me.

"You were."

My stomach tightened.

"Why?"

"Because Daniel Whitmore left his final invention to his child."

I stared.

"Me?"

Alexander nodded.

"Your DNA is the key."

I shook my head.

"This is insane."

"It sounds impossible."

"Yet every person around you has been lying for twenty-five years."

I had no answer.

Because he was right.

Then my phone rang.

James.

I answered.

His voice was urgent.

"Vivienne."

"What happened?"

"We found Victor Lang."

"Where?"

A pause.

"He turned himself in."

I frowned.

"Why?"

James's voice became lower.

"Because he says he knows who killed your mother."

My heart stopped.

"Who?"

Another pause.

Then:

"He says..."

"The person responsible is Richard Carter."

I looked at my father.

The man who raised me.

The man who loved me.

The man who had protected me.

And suddenly...

I was trapped between two impossible truths.

One man saying my father was innocent.

Another saying he was guilty.

And somewhere between them...

was the truth my mother died trying to reveal.

Before we could leave, Alexander handed me one final envelope.

"This was your mother's."

I looked at it.

"Why do you have it?"

"Because she trusted me."

I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

The first line destroyed me.

"My dearest Vivienne..."

My hands trembled.

My mother had written to me.

Not my father.

Not anyone else.

Me.

The final words were:

"If you are reading this, it means I failed to protect you."

A tear fell onto the paper.

Then I read the next sentence.

And my entire world changed.

"The man you call your father saved your life..."

A pause.

"But he also destroyed the life you were supposed to have."

I looked up.

Because now I finally understood.

The truth wasn't simple.

My father wasn't just a hero.

He wasn't just a villain.

He was something far more complicated.

A man who loved me.

A man who protected me.

May you like

And a man who had hidden the biggest secret of my life.
