CHAPTER 6 — The Woman Behind the Plan

CHAPTER 6 — The Woman Behind the Plan
The moment my father said those words, the room felt colder.
"What Eleanor did before you ever met Dominic."
I kept hearing them in my head.
Before me.
Before the wedding.
Before the insults.
Before the diamond ring.
There was a story I didn't know.
And somehow...
I was at the center of it.
"Where is Eleanor now?"
My father's voice was calm.
Too calm.
That was when I knew he was angry.
James checked his tablet.
"She attempted to board a private flight this morning."
"Destination?"
"Switzerland."
My father nodded.
"Stop her."
I looked at him.
"Dad."
He turned toward me.
"Yes?"
"I don't want revenge."
He studied my face.
"I know."
"I want the truth."
A small smile appeared.
"That is why I am proud of you."
Two hours later, we discovered something that changed everything.
Eleanor had not planned her escape alone.
Someone helped her.
Someone with access.
Someone inside the Carter organization.
The same organization that had been betrayed.
James placed the report on the table.
"The person who arranged the flight was a former executive assistant."
My father looked at the name.
His expression changed.
"Thomas Reed."
I recognized the name.
"Who is he?"
My father leaned back.
"He worked for me for nineteen years."
"Nineteen years?"
"Yes."
"Then why would he betray you?"
My father stared at the documents.
"Because sometimes people don't betray you suddenly."
"They spend years convincing you they are loyal."
Those words stayed with me.
Because they weren't just about business.
They were about family too.
That evening, Dominic came back.
This time, he looked different.
Not like a husband trying to save his marriage.
Like a son trying to understand how much of his life had been controlled by someone else.
"I talked to my father."
I looked at him.
"Your father?"
He nodded.
"He didn't know everything."
"What does that mean?"
Dominic sat down.
"He knew my mother was ambitious."
"He knew she wanted me to marry someone powerful."
"But he didn't know she manipulated everything."
I crossed my arms.
"And what did he say?"
Dominic looked away.
"He apologized."
I waited.
"He said he was sorry for allowing her to control the family."
A bitter smile appeared on my face.
"Everyone is sorry after the damage is done."
He looked at me.
"You're right."
The fact that he didn't defend himself surprised me.
"You know..."
I said quietly.
"That used to be the difference between us."
"What?"
"I always wanted people to admit when they hurt me."
"And you always wanted me to understand why they did it."
Dominic lowered his head.
"I was wrong."
For once...
I believed him.
But belief wasn't the same as forgiveness.
The next morning, my father received another message.
A video file.
No sender.
No explanation.
Just one sentence:
"You want the truth? Watch this."
We gathered in the office.
The screen turned on.
The video showed a restaurant.
Security footage.
Three years ago.
Before my wedding.
A woman entered.
Eleanor.
She sat across from someone.
My heart stopped.
Because I knew the person sitting with her.
Thomas Reed.
My father's former executive.
The conversation began.
We couldn't hear everything.
But the subtitles were clear.
Eleanor placed a folder on the table.
Thomas opened it.
Then she spoke.
The audio became clearer.
"I need access."
Thomas looked nervous.
"You understand what you're asking?"
Eleanor smiled.
"My son deserves more than a small company."
"And your daughter..."
She paused.
"Your daughter is the key."
My body went cold.
My daughter?
No.
She meant me.
She was talking about me.
Thomas leaned forward.
"What if Richard Carter finds out?"
Eleanor smiled.
"He won't."
"And even if he does..."
She looked confident.
"Vivienne doesn't know who she is."
The room went silent.
I felt something inside me break.
Not because she underestimated my wealth.
Because she underestimated me.
She didn't see me as a person.
Only as a door.
A connection.
A tool.
The video continued.
Thomas asked:
"What happens after Dominic marries her?"
Eleanor answered:
"After the wedding..."
"Everything changes."
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
I walked outside.
I needed air.
I needed space.
I needed to remember that I was still myself.
Not a billionaire's daughter.
Not a wife.
Not someone's opportunity.
Just me.
A few minutes later, Dominic followed.
"I know you're angry."
I didn't turn around.
"I'm not angry."
"Then what?"
I looked at the garden.
"I'm hurt."
He became silent.
"Do you know what hurts the most?"
"What?"
"Everyone saw my name before they saw me."
"My father saw a daughter."
"My husband saw a wife."
"Your mother saw an opportunity."
I swallowed.
"But nobody saw Vivienne."
Dominic stepped closer.
"I did."
I looked at him.
"Did you?"
He froze.
Because he knew the answer wasn't simple.
"I thought I did."
I nodded.
"That's the problem."
That night, something unexpected happened.
Dominic called his mother.
Not secretly.
Not privately.
In front of us.
Eleanor answered after several rings.
"What do you want?"
Her voice was cold.
Dominic's expression hardened.
"I want the truth."
Silence.
Then:
"About what?"
"About Vivienne."
Another silence.
Then Eleanor laughed.
A small, cruel laugh.
"After everything, you still don't understand?"
Dominic looked shocked.
"Understand what?"
Eleanor's voice changed.
"You think I hated her because she was poor?"
"No."
"You think I hated her because she wasn't good enough?"
"No."
"Then why?"
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Then Eleanor said:
"Because she reminded me of your father."
Dominic frowned.
"What?"
Eleanor continued.
"Because Richard Carter took everything from people like us."
My father stepped closer.
His expression changed.
"People like us?"
Eleanor continued.
"You don't know the history."
"You don't know what your father did."
The call ended.
Everyone looked at my father.
He was silent.
Too silent.
"Dad?"
He didn't answer immediately.
Then he said something I never expected.
"There is another story."
I stared at him.
"What story?"
He looked toward the window.
"The reason Eleanor hates me..."
"Started twenty-five years ago."
My heart tightened.
"What happened?"
My father turned around.
And for the first time in my life...
I saw pain in his eyes.
"Your mother."
The room became silent.
"My mother?"
He nodded.
"Eleanor wasn't always your enemy."
I held my breath.
"She was your mother's best friend."
I couldn't speak.
Because suddenly...
everything changed.
Eleanor wasn't just a cruel mother-in-law.
She wasn't just a woman chasing money.
She was someone connected to my family.
To my mother.
To a past I knew nothing about.
And the woman who destroyed my wedding...
might have once been someone my family trusted.
My father looked at me.
"Vivienne."
"Before you decide what happens next..."
"You need to know what happened twenty-five years ago."
Because the truth about Eleanor...
was not born from greed.
May you like
It was born from betrayal.
