CHAPTER 8 — The Enemy Nobody Saw Coming

CHAPTER 8 — The Enemy Nobody Saw Coming
The name Thomas Reed had become a shadow hanging over everything.
For weeks, he had been the missing piece.
The loyal employee who betrayed my father.
The man who helped Eleanor manipulate Dominic's future.
The person who had access to information nobody else should have seen.
But now...
he was claiming something impossible.
That Eleanor wasn't the mastermind.
That someone else had been controlling the game.
And if that was true...
then every assumption we had made was wrong.
Thomas arrived at Carter Estate just after sunset.
No security escort.
No lawyer.
No attempt to hide.
Just an exhausted man carrying a leather briefcase.
The moment he entered the room, my father stood.
For nineteen years, Thomas had worked beside him.
They had built companies together.
Shared victories.
Survived crises.
And now they stood on opposite sides of a betrayal.
"You have ten minutes."
My father's voice was cold.
Thomas nodded.
"I know."
His eyes moved toward me.
"Miss Carter."
I studied him carefully.
This was the man who had helped destroy my family's trust.
The man who helped Eleanor create a false reality around me.
But there was something strange.
He didn't look like a criminal.
He looked like someone who had lost everything.
"I know you have every reason to hate me."
I said nothing.
Thomas opened his briefcase.
"I deserve that."
He placed several documents on the table.
"But before you decide what I am..."
"I need you to know what happened."
The first document was a bank transfer.
The second was a contract.
The third was a photograph.
A man standing beside Thomas.
I looked closer.
Then froze.
"Who is that?"
My father took the picture.
His expression changed.
"Victor Lang."
I looked at him.
"Who?"
My father didn't answer immediately.
Thomas did.
"The man who almost destroyed Carter International twenty-five years ago."
The room became silent.
Thomas explained.
Victor Lang had once been my father's biggest competitor.
He was brilliant.
Ambitious.
And ruthless.
While my father built companies through partnerships, Victor built his empire through control.
Twenty-five years ago, when Carter International began growing rapidly, Victor tried to buy the company.
My father refused.
So Victor changed strategies.
"He couldn't beat you in business," Thomas said.
"So he decided to destroy you personally."
My father's face became hard.
"How do you know this?"
Thomas looked down.
"Because I helped him."
Nobody moved.
The confession landed like a bomb.
I stared at him.
"You?"
Thomas nodded.
"At the time, I was young."
"Angry."
"And I believed your father had taken opportunities away from people like me."
My father looked at him.
"You betrayed me because you were jealous."
Thomas accepted the accusation.
"Yes."
A pause.
"But I didn't understand what I was doing."
I looked at Eleanor.
She stood quietly.
Not defending herself.
Not denying anything.
Thomas continued.
"Victor discovered my resentment."
"He used it."
"He introduced me to Eleanor."
My eyes moved toward her.
"So Eleanor wasn't the beginning."
"No."
Thomas shook his head.
"She was a victim too."
Everyone looked at Eleanor.
She immediately rejected the idea.
"Don't call me that."
Her voice was bitter.
"I made my choices."
Thomas nodded.
"Yes."
"But Victor knew exactly what buttons to push."
"He knew Eleanor wanted her son to succeed."
"He knew she was jealous of your mother."
"He used those emotions."
My father walked toward the window.
I had never seen him look so tired.
"So Victor created all of this."
Thomas nodded.
"Not everything."
A pause.
"The marriage plan was Eleanor."
"But the larger goal..."
"Was Carter International."
I looked at him.
"What goal?"
Thomas opened another file.
Inside were documents showing ownership transfers.
Shell companies.
Hidden accounts.
My stomach tightened.
"He's trying to take control."
My father turned.
"Not just control."
Thomas said quietly.
"Ownership."
The room became silent.
Because suddenly, the wedding drama seemed small.
The stolen diamond.
The humiliation.
The accusations.
They were only pieces of a much larger plan.
Someone had spent twenty-five years preparing.
And my marriage had been one step in that plan.
I looked at Dominic.
He was standing near the doorway.
He had been quiet the entire time.
His face was pale.
"My entire marriage..."
He whispered.
"Was part of a business strategy."
I felt something inside me break.
Because even though Dominic had hurt me...
he was also a victim.
A manipulated son.
A man raised by people who taught him that love and ambition could be mixed together.
Later that night, Dominic and I sat outside.
The garden was quiet.
For the first time in days, there were no arguments.
No accusations.
Just two people trying to understand how everything fell apart.
"I don't know who I am anymore."
Dominic finally said.
I looked at him.
"What do you mean?"
"My whole life, I thought I was building something."
"But maybe I was just following someone else's plan."
I understood that feeling.
Because I had felt it too.
"I know."
He looked at me.
"Do you hate me?"
The question surprised me.
I thought about it.
"No."
His eyes lowered.
"But I don't know if I can love you the way I did."
He nodded slowly.
"I understand."
That was the first time he didn't ask me to forgive him.
The first time he accepted that my pain mattered.
And somehow...
that hurt more.
The next morning, Victor Lang finally appeared.
Not in person.
On television.
Every major news channel was broadcasting his announcement.
"Victor Lang Acquires Controlling Interest in Several Carter-Related Companies."
I stared at the screen.
My father stood beside me.
The reporter continued:
"Sources indicate a major corporate battle is developing between Lang Global and Carter International."
Then Victor appeared.
Older.
Gray hair.
Confident.
Smiling.
"I have spent twenty-five years waiting for this moment."
He looked directly into the camera.
"Richard Carter built an empire."
A pause.
"Now I will take it from him."
The broadcast ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
"Hello?"
A man's voice replied.
"Vivienne Carter."
I froze.
"Who is this?"
A quiet laugh.
"You don't remember me."
My heart tightened.
"Should I?"
The voice became colder.
"You were a child when I lost everything."
I stood still.
Then he said:
"But your mother remembered."
I looked at my father.
He had heard enough to understand.
Victor.
The man who had haunted our family for twenty-five years.
He continued:
"I want you to know something."
"Your mother didn't die because of an accident."
My entire body went cold.
"What did you say?"
The call ended.
I stood there frozen.
Because one sentence had changed everything.
The secret was no longer about money.
Or power.
Or revenge.
It was about the death of my mother.
And now...
May you like
I needed the truth more than ever.
