Chapter 10 - The Threat Changed Everything

Detective Reed arrived before sunrise.

He photographed everything.

The open door.

The missing documents.

The dress.

The message.

Sophie stood behind me clutching her stuffed rabbit.

"Did Grandma write that?"

I didn't know what to say.

Reed arranged temporary police protection.

Then he asked whether Sophie and I had somewhere else to stay.

Caroline offered an apartment owned by her family.

I refused.

I trusted Caroline more than before.

But I wasn't placing Sophie inside another family's war.

Instead, we stayed with my best friend, Maya.

Only Detective Reed knew the address.

By noon, forensic technicians found a partial fingerprint on the plastic garment cover around Sophie's dress.

The print did not belong to Preston.

Or my parents.

It belonged to Eric Fallon.

The hotel assistant manager who had helped access the security system.

Police arrested him that afternoon.

He talked within hours.

My father had paid him again.

Not to threaten me.

According to Eric, the instruction was only to recover the trust documents.

"Who wrote the message?"

Detective Reed asked.

Eric claimed he didn't know.

He had been told someone else would enter after him.

"Who?"

Eric hesitated.

Then he gave a name.

Margaret Whitmore.

My mother.

I felt no satisfaction.

Only exhaustion.

Detective Reed obtained a warrant for my parents' home.

They found the black marker in my mother's study.

They also found something far more important.

A locked metal file box.

Inside were copies of my grandfather's original trust.

Financial statements.

Forged authorizations.

And handwritten notes spanning twelve years.

One page contained a list of my weaknesses.

Evelyn trusts family approval.

Avoid discussing finances.

Use Preston as emotional pressure.

If necessary, remind her she could lose Sophie.

I read it three times.

My mother had written it.

My own mother had analyzed how to control me.

Like I was a business problem.

At the bottom of the page was a final note.

Henry made a mistake giving her half. Fix before she learns.

Something inside me finally died.

Not love.

Love can survive disappointment.

What died was hope.

The hope that somewhere beneath all the cruelty, my parents had loved me in some broken way.

They hadn't.

They had managed me.

Used me.

Reduced me whenever it protected the son they preferred.

My mother was arrested for evidence tampering, intimidation, and conspiracy-related charges.

My father was taken into custody later that evening.

Preston's attorneys immediately requested another hearing.

They wanted his bail conditions relaxed.

Instead, prosecutors asked the judge to revoke bail.

Because of the threats.

Because of the evidence.

Because witnesses were being pressured.

The judge agreed.

Preston was taken back into custody.

As officers led him from the courtroom, he turned toward me.

For the first time since the wedding, we stood only a few feet apart.

He smiled.

Then he mouthed something.

Four words.

You think you've won.

I didn't respond.

Because behind him, federal agents were waiting.

And they weren't there because of Sophie.

May you like

They were there because investigators had discovered where eighty million dollars had really gone.
