Chapter 8 - They Came for My Daughter Again

Two days after Sophie left the hospital, Child Protective Services knocked on my apartment door.

The social worker looked apologetic.

"A report was made alleging neglect."

I felt ice move through my veins.

"What kind of neglect?"

"Failure to protect your daughter from a violent environment."

I almost laughed.

"At my brother's wedding?"

The social worker nodded.

The complaint claimed I knew Preston was unstable yet deliberately brought Sophie to the event.

It also claimed I encouraged a confrontation to create a financial lawsuit.

Only a few people could have written that report.

My parents.

Or Preston.

They were trying to transform my daughter's injuries into evidence against me.

I allowed the social worker inside.

I showed her Sophie's room.

Her school records.

Her medical discharge papers.

The police report.

Then I played the seventeen-second wedding video.

The woman's face changed.

"I'm sorry you had to show me that."

"So am I."

She closed her folder.

"This appears retaliatory."

"Can you document that?"

"I can document what I find."

Before leaving, she looked at me.

"Someone seems very interested in frightening you."

"They should have tried before they hurt my daughter."

That evening, Sophie sat beside me on the couch.

She hadn't slept through the night since the wedding.

Every sudden noise made her flinch.

When somebody knocked at the door, she froze.

"Mommy?"

"Yes?"

"Are they going to take me away?"

My heart broke.

"No."

"Grandma said maybe you weren't good at being a mom."

"When?"

"At the wedding."

I stared at her.

"What exactly did she say?"

Sophie looked nervous.

"Before Uncle Preston said his phone was gone."

I took her hand.

"It's okay."

"Tell me."

"Grandma said if I ever made trouble for Uncle Preston, people might decide I shouldn't live with you."

Everything stopped.

My mother had threatened my child before the framing even happened.

That meant the plan had been more organized than I realized.

I called Detective Reed.

He came over within an hour with a child interviewer.

Sophie's statement was recorded carefully.

Then Reed asked me something unexpected.

"Has your mother ever threatened custody before?"

"No."

"Has your family ever tried to establish you as unstable?"

I remembered therapy when I was twenty-three.

My mother insisted on choosing the therapist.

My father paid the bills.

After six sessions, I stopped going.

Years later, during my divorce, my mother repeatedly described me as emotionally fragile.

At the time, I thought she was being cruel.

Now I wondered whether she had been building a story.

Detective Reed requested old family communications.

We found something within two hours.

An email my father sent Preston three years earlier.

If Evelyn ever discovers the trust structure, we deal with her credibility first.

Another from my mother.

She's always been emotional. People will believe she misunderstood.

Then a final reply from Preston.

And if she doesn't?

My father's answer was six words.

Then we make sure Sophie matters.

I read the line again.

Sophie.

Three years before the wedding.

They hadn't invented the idea of using my daughter that night.

May you like

They had been willing to use her for years.
