Chapter 5 - My Parents Chose Their Son

Detective Reed took Caroline's phone as evidence.

My mother called twelve times that afternoon.

I didn't answer.

My father called six.

I blocked him.

Preston never called.

At four twenty, a hospital administrator entered Sophie's room with two police officers.

Preston had been arrested.

Aggravated battery involving a child.

Evidence tampering was also being investigated.

I expected relief.

Instead, I felt numb.

Sophie was awake.

She was coloring a horse with a purple crayon.

"Is Uncle Preston going to jail?"

I looked at the officers.

Neither spoke.

I sat beside her.

"He has to answer for what he did."

She thought about that.

"Is Grandma going too?"

My heart cracked.

"Why would you ask that?"

"Because she put the phone in my pocket."

I froze.

"You saw her?"

Sophie nodded.

"She told me my jacket was crooked."

I closed my eyes.

My daughter had known.

She simply hadn't understood what she had witnessed.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"I thought she was fixing it."

Her voice became smaller.

"Then everybody said I stole it."

I held her hand.

"Listen to me."

"You didn't do anything wrong."

"Not one thing."

She looked at the bandage around her head.

"Then why did everybody believe him?"

That was harder.

Because adults were supposed to protect children from cruelty.

But sometimes adults protected power instead.

"Because some people become so used to believing someone that they stop asking whether he's telling the truth."

"Even Grandma?"

"Even Grandma."

Sophie stared at her drawing.

"I don't want to see her."

"You don't have to."

That evening, my mother appeared anyway.

Hospital security stopped her at the elevator.

She called from downstairs.

I answered once.

"You need to leave."

"Evelyn, I need five minutes."

"No."

"I made a terrible mistake."

"You planted evidence on my child."

"I thought Preston was only trying to get you to leave."

"You helped him call Sophie a thief."

"I didn't know he would become violent."

"You knew who he was."

Silence.

That hurt more than denial.

My mother whispered.

"Please don't give that recording to police."

"They already have it."

Her breath caught.

"Evelyn."

"What?"

"Your brother's life will be destroyed."

I looked at Sophie.

"No."

"His life is finally going to belong to him."

"He made the choices."

"He gets the consequences."

Then my mother said something I would never forget.

"What about us?"

I almost couldn't believe her.

"What about you?"

"Your father could be implicated."

"He helped."

"We are your parents."

"And Sophie is my child."

"You are choosing her over your whole family."

I looked at the little girl coloring beside me.

"No."

"You chose Preston over the whole family years ago."

"I'm just refusing to help you do it anymore."

I ended the call.

An hour later, Detective Reed returned with disturbing news.

Preston had made bail.

And before leaving the station, his attorney had filed a statement claiming the oak board struck Sophie accidentally when I lunged at Preston during an argument.

He wasn't just denying it.

He was blaming me.

But Detective Reed had one more piece of information.

A wedding guest had come forward with a video.

Not CCTV.

A phone recording.

And unlike the ballroom camera...

May you like

It had sound.
