Chapter One: The Silent Signal
The leather belt slipped from Victor's hand and landed on the hardwood floor with a dull thud.
No one moved.
The older man stepped into the living room with quiet authority, followed by two police officers.
"Mr. Victor Lawson," one officer said calmly. "Please step away from Mrs. Lawson."
Victor looked from the officers to his pregnant wife, Olivia.
"You called them?" he asked.
Olivia slowly lowered her trembling hand.
"I asked for help before tonight," she replied.
The older man removed his gloves.
He was Judge Richard Hale, Olivia's godfather and the executor of her late parents' estate.
Three weeks earlier, Olivia had confided in him that she feared escalating intimidation inside the house. At his urging, she had documented concerning incidents and established a safety plan.
When she quietly pressed the emergency shortcut on her phone beneath the sofa cushion, it sent her location and a prewritten message directly to Detective Sarah Bennett, who had advised her to use it if she ever believed she was in immediate danger.
The officers separated everyone while paramedics examined Olivia.
Victor insisted it had been "a family argument."
