CHAPTER 2: THE TRUTH HIS FAMILY STOLE

Nathan stared at the signatures until the words blurred.

His mother's elegant handwriting.

His former attorney's approval.

Every letter Emma had mailed had been intercepted before it ever reached him.

Every ultrasound photo had been filed away.

Every plea had been buried.

He looked up slowly.

"My mother knew?"

Emma laughed—a quiet, exhausted laugh that carried years of disappointment.

"She knew before anyone else."

Nathan felt his knees weaken.

Emma slid another envelope across the table.

"I kept everything."

Inside was a handwritten note.

Emma recognized the paper immediately.

It was written by Margaret Harrison.

Nathan's mother.

Emma,

Nathan is building an empire. A child will only distract him.
Accept the settlement, disappear quietly, and never contact my son again.
It is better for everyone.

Nathan's hands trembled.

"I never saw this."

"I know."

"You have to believe me."

Emma looked into his eyes for a long moment.

"I do."

"That's what makes this even sadder."

The silence was interrupted by little footsteps.

Ethan walked into the kitchen holding a toy rocket.

He looked at Nathan with innocent curiosity.

"Mom..."

"Is he really the man from our picture?"

Emma nodded gently.

"Yes."

Nathan's voice barely worked.

"Can... can I see it?"

Noah disappeared into the bedroom and returned with a faded photograph.

It showed Nathan and Emma on a beach years earlier.

Emma was laughing.

Nathan had one arm around her shoulders.

On the back, written in a child's careful handwriting, were the words:

My Daddy Before He Got Lost.

Nathan closed his eyes.

He had negotiated billion-dollar mergers without emotion.

Now one sentence shattered him completely.

That night he made a decision.

Not to buy forgiveness.

May you like

Not to repair his reputation.

But to uncover every lie that had stolen four years from his sons.
