Chapter 1: The Confession

Julian Cole admired the Manhattan skyline while swirling a glass of thirty-year-old whiskey.

"This city belongs to men like me," he said with a satisfied smile.

His bride remained kneeling beside the bed exactly where he had ordered her.

Silent.

Obedient.

Perfect.

Julian picked up the leather folder from the nightstand and tossed it into her lap.

"Open it."

Emily unfolded the documents.

Every page carried the logo of an exclusive psychiatric hospital.

Admission papers.

Guardianship agreements.

Financial authorization forms.

"You'll sign those tomorrow," Julian said casually.

"The doctors are already paid."

"They'll diagnose you with severe delusions."

He laughed.

"Within a month, everyone will believe you've lost your mind."

Emily lowered her head without answering.

Exactly what he expected.

He never noticed the tiny blue light flashing inside the diamond necklace resting against her throat.

Miles away, inside an unmarked surveillance van, Detective Rebecca Lawson listened through her headset.

Every word Julian spoke appeared as live transcription across a laptop screen.

Forgery.

Fraud.

Conspiracy.

False imprisonment.

Each sentence added another criminal charge.

Rebecca looked at the district attorney sitting beside her.

"We've waited almost two years."

"We finally have him."

Back inside the penthouse, Julian reached into a locked cabinet and removed a syringe.

"This is only a sedative," he said.

"You'll sleep through everything."

Emily slowly looked up.

For the first time since their wedding began...

She smiled.

Julian frowned.

"What are you smiling about?"

May you like

Emily calmly touched the necklace.

"I'm smiling because you finally said everything out loud."
