Chapter 1: The Recording That Changed Everything

Colonel Alexander Brooks unlocked Elena's phone with trembling fingers.

"I didn't know if anyone would believe Sofia," Elena whispered. "So I started recording when I heard them arguing."

She pressed play.

The bedroom filled with voices.

Carmen's came first.

"You don't become a Brooks anymore. You're a Navarro now. You'll sign that condo over to Javier tonight, or you'll learn what happens to stubborn wives."

Then Javier spoke.

"Mom's right. Stop acting like you own anything."

Sofia's frightened voice followed.

"My father gave me that condo before the wedding. It's not yours."

There was the unmistakable sound of something hitting the floor.

Then another.

A sharp cry.

Elena gasped on the recording.

"Sofia!"

Javier's voice became colder.

"Don't interfere."

Another cry echoed through the room before the recording suddenly stopped.

Silence filled the bedroom.

Colonel Brooks lowered the phone without saying a word.

His face had become unreadable.

Javier finally forced a laugh.

"This proves nothing."

Colonel Brooks slowly turned toward him.

"It proves enough."

Carmen folded her arms.

"You're going to destroy your daughter's marriage over one argument?"

Alexander stared at the unsigned property transfer lying on the hardwood floor.

The document still waited for Sofia's signature.

A pen rested beside it.

No signature.

No transfer.

No stolen property.

Everything suddenly made sense.

"This marriage," Alexander said quietly, "was never about love."

He looked directly at Javier.

"It was about that condo."

Neither Javier nor Carmen answered.

Because they couldn't.

At that moment, two Chicago police officers entered the apartment, responding to Elena's emergency call.

One officer looked around the destroyed bedroom.

"What happened here?"

May you like

Alexander handed over the phone.

"I believe you'll want to hear this."
