CHAPTER 2 — THE TRUTH HIDDEN BEHIND THE BRUISES

No one spoke.
Only Hannah's quiet sobs filled the hospital room.
Dr. Melissa Grant pulled a chair beside the bed and spoke gently.
"Hannah... you're safe here."
"You don't have to protect anyone."
Hannah's hands trembled beneath the blanket.
She looked at Ethan.
Then at baby Owen sleeping peacefully in his father's arms.
Finally, she whispered,
"I wasn't afraid for myself."
"I was afraid she'd take Owen."
Ethan frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Fresh tears rolled down Hannah's face.
"Your mother said if I told anyone what was happening..."
"...she would convince everyone I was an unfit mother."
The room went completely still.
Dr. Grant quietly closed the privacy curtain.
"Can you tell us exactly what happened?"
Hannah nodded weakly.
"While you were away, Ethan..."
"She moved into the house to help."
"At first she cooked."
"Cleaned."
"Took care of Owen."
"Then everything changed."
She explained that Patricia began controlling every part of her day.
She criticized Hannah for feeding the baby too often.
She hid Hannah's phone, saying new mothers needed "less distraction."
She refused to let Hannah nap, insisting that "good mothers don't complain."
Whenever Hannah became dizzy or weak, Patricia accused her of being lazy.
Two days before Ethan returned, Hannah nearly fainted while carrying Owen.
Patricia grabbed her arm so hard that bruises formed.
Then she whispered,
"If anyone asks, you fell."
Dr. Grant looked at Ethan.
"The bruising pattern is consistent with forceful gripping."
She pressed the nurse call button.
May you like
"I need hospital security."
"And notify the police."
