CHAPTER 3 — THE LIE THAT FELL APART

Detectives arrived later that afternoon.

Patricia appeared confident when she walked into the hospital.

"I came to see my grandson."

Instead, she found two officers waiting outside Hannah's room.

"This is ridiculous," she said.

"I was only helping."

Detective Ramirez calmly opened a notebook.

"We'd like to ask you a few questions."

Patricia insisted Hannah had become forgetful after childbirth.

She claimed the bruises came from falls.

She denied ever raising her voice.

Then Ethan quietly spoke.

"I installed smart cameras in the nursery before Owen was born."

Patricia's expression froze.

"The recordings upload automatically to cloud storage."

He opened an app on his phone.

The first video showed Hannah struggling to stand while Patricia watched without offering help.

The second showed Patricia pulling Hannah roughly by the wrist after accusing her of holding Owen incorrectly.

The third captured words that silenced everyone.

"If Ethan asks..."

"...remember that you fell."

Detective Ramirez slowly closed the notebook.

"You've answered our questions."

An officer stepped forward and informed Patricia that she was under arrest on suspicion of assault and witness intimidation. She protested loudly, but the recordings and Hannah's medical findings became important evidence in the investigation.

As she was escorted away, Patricia looked at Ethan.

"I was trying to make her a stronger mother."

May you like

Ethan answered quietly,

"You were making her afraid to be one."
