Chapter 5 – Home, Finally

Two weeks later, Lily was healthy again.

Maya's pregnancy was progressing normally.

The house felt different.

Peaceful.

Bright.

Alive.

Marcus hired a housekeeper twice a week.

He rearranged his work schedule.

Every evening became family dinner.

No phones.

No meetings.

No interruptions.

One afternoon, Maya found Marcus planting flowers beneath the kitchen window.

"What are those?"

He smiled.

"Sunflowers."

"They always face the light."

She slipped her hand into his.

"You didn't just protect us."

"You gave us our home back."

Months later, their son was born healthy.

Lily proudly introduced herself as the best big sister in the world.

Brenda sent letters.

Marcus read every one.

He hoped she would someday become a better person.

But forgiveness didn't require reopening the front door.

Some boundaries exist because love must be protected, not because it has disappeared.

Standing in the backyard while his children laughed beneath the summer sun, Marcus finally understood something his father had once told him.

A house is built with money.

A home is built by the people willing to protect each other.

And that was the only inheritance worth leaving behind.
