One year later, the company celebrated its seventy-fifth anniversary.

Arthur officially retired.

During the ceremony, he surprised every guest.

"The next Chairwoman of Sterling Holdings..."

"...is my daughter."

The ballroom erupted into applause.

I accepted the position with one promise.

"No employee will ever fear the people meant to protect them."

Under new leadership, the company expanded employee wellness programs, domestic violence assistance, and scholarship funds for women pursuing careers in business and law.

My father's legacy had always been measured by buildings.

Mine would be measured by people.

As the celebration ended, Arthur joined me on the terrace overlooking Manhattan.

"You know," he said with a smile, "everyone thinks I saved you that night."

I shook my head.

"No."

"You reminded me who I already was."

He slipped his arm around my shoulder.

"The strongest people aren't the ones who never fall."

"They're the ones who stand back up."

Far below us, the city lights stretched endlessly into the night.

Adrian had once believed wealth made him untouchable.

He learned that power built on fear can disappear overnight.
