Chapter 13 - THE LEDGER OF THE DEAD

Rain hammered the cemetery as Arthur and Mara climbed the hill.
The mausoleum door stood open.
Inside, candles burned around marble crypts. Margaret knelt before a stone panel, pulling loose pages from a metal box and feeding them into a flame.
Arthur raised his weapon. “Step away.”
Margaret laughed. “You’re too late.”
Mara moved toward the burning pages.
Margaret drew a small pistol from her coat and fired.
The bullet struck Mara’s vest and threw her backward.
Arthur fired once, hitting Margaret’s shoulder. The gun fell across the stone floor.
He kicked it away and pressed cloth against Mara’s vest.
“I’m fine,” Mara gasped. “Save the ledger.”
Lily entered behind the agents despite Arthur’s order to remain outside.
She saw Margaret bleeding beside the crypt.
“You planned my death,” Lily said.
Margaret’s face twisted. “You were never supposed to be part of this family. Richard married beneath him.”
“No,” Lily replied. “He married someone you thought you could control.”
Arthur pulled the remaining ledger from the box. Several pages had burned, but most survived.
Names filled the paper in careful handwriting.
Beside Elena Miller’s name was a date, a payment, and one instruction:
VEHICLE FAILURE — APPROVED BY T.V. AND M.W.
Arthur looked at Margaret.
“You approved my wife’s murder.”
“She was going to destroy everything we built.”
“You mean everything you stole.”
Margaret smiled through the pain. “Elena made one mistake.”
“What?”
“She believed you would choose justice over revenge.”
Arthur’s finger rested near the trigger.
For one dark second, he imagined ending it there. No trial. No lawyers. No expensive defense.
Then Lily touched his arm.
“Dad,” she said softly. “Don’t become what they said you were.”
Arthur lowered the weapon.
Agents cuffed Margaret.
As they carried Mara toward the ambulance, she held up one rescued page.
“There’s another name,” she said.
Arthur read it.
The prosecutor who had tried to stop the transfers.
Beside his name were the words:
May you like

The network’s leader had been standing inside their command center the entire time.
