Chapter 5 - THREE SECONDS

Arthur moved before Mercer finished the sentence.

He threw the metal tray.

Mercer flinched.

Arthur crossed the distance in three seconds, trapped the gun hand, drove Mercer against the wall, and forced the weapon to the floor. The shot exploded into the ceiling.

Lily screamed.

Mara and two agents rushed in. Mercer was pinned, cuffed, and searched.

Arthur picked up the tablet from beneath the chair.

Mercer laughed through blood on his lip. “You think that file proves anything? Elena was investigating the Whitmores. She knew the risk.”

Arthur crouched beside him. “Did you kill her?”

“No.”

“Did you help?”

Mercer’s smile disappeared.

That was answer enough.

Mara hauled him upright. “You’re under arrest for obstruction, assault on a federal officer, and attempted destruction of evidence.”

Mercer looked toward Margaret. “You said I’d be protected.”

Margaret turned away.

Richard stared at his mother. “What did he mean?”

For the first time, the perfect Whitmore family began cracking in public.

Agents separated Mercer from the guests. Arthur returned to Lily.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “You should never have seen that.”

She looked at his hands. “You took a gun from him like you’d done it a hundred times.”

Arthur sat down.

“Not a hundred.”

“How many?”

“Enough.”

Lily’s eyes filled. “You lied to me my whole life.”

“I tried to give you a normal life.”

“Normal?” She pointed through the window at Richard. “I married a monster because I thought quiet, respectable men were safe.”

Her words hit harder than Mercer’s gun ever could.

Arthur nodded slowly. “You’re right.”

The analyst’s voice returned through the tablet.

“We decrypted part of Elena’s folder.”

A video appeared.

Elena sat in a parked car, rain sliding down the windshield. She looked tired and afraid.

“If Arthur sees this,” she said, “then I failed to get home.”

Arthur stopped breathing.

Elena continued.

“The Whitmores are not just bribing officials. They are buying distressed properties through forced guardianships. They declare vulnerable spouses unstable, seize control of their assets, and move the money through charitable foundations.”

Lily whispered, “That’s what Richard was doing to me.”

Elena leaned closer to the camera.

“And Arthur, if they ever come for Lily, do not trust the person standing closest to you.”

The video cut to black.

Mara returned to the doorway.

May you like

Arthur looked at her.

She had been his closest partner for twelve years.
