Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN AT THE TOP

Evelyn Bennett had spent thirty years appearing beside Harrison Bennett in photographs.
Charity dinners.
Hospital openings.
Political fundraisers.
Family Christmas cards.
Always elegant.
Always smiling.
Always invisible enough to avoid scrutiny.
According to Harrison, that was deliberate.
M-17 hadn't been created by a greedy doctor.
It had been created by Evelyn.
Her father founded the private fertility network that eventually became part of St. Catherine.
When Evelyn discovered Harrison was unlikely to father children, she arranged an unauthorized donor substitution.
Mason was born.
Harrison didn't learn the truth until Mason was six.
By then, he loved the boy.
And Evelyn had already altered the trust records.
She threatened to destroy Harrison if he exposed her.
So he remained silent.
Years later, Thomas Reed and Antonio Moretti discovered the scheme.
They found sixteen more cases.
Powerful families.
Judges.
Executives.
Political donors.
People whose inheritances and identities depended on false DNA.
They prepared to expose it.
Evelyn stopped them.
"Did she kill my father?"
I asked.
Harrison shook his head.
"No."
"Then where is he?"
"I helped move him after the crash."
"To where?"
"A recovery facility."
"With Antonio?"
"Initially."
Luka's hands curled into fists.
"You kept my father imprisoned."
Harrison looked at him.
"I kept him alive."
"That's what you tell yourself?"
Harrison had no answer.
He explained that Thomas recovered faster than expected.
One year after the crash, Thomas escaped.
Evelyn spent years searching for him.
She never found him.
Neither had Harrison.
My father had survived.
And somewhere, at least for a time, he had been free.
"Why didn't he come home?"
My voice broke.
Harrison looked at me with something almost like pity.
"Because Evelyn threatened you."
I couldn't speak.
"Thomas believed disappearing was the only way to keep you alive."
My father hadn't abandoned me.
He had vanished to protect me.
I covered my mouth.
Luka sat beside me.
His shoulder touched mine.
I let it.
Harrison handed Noah a small key card.
"This accesses a private Bennett archive."
"Why give us this now?"
Noah asked.
Harrison looked twenty years older.
"Because Evelyn has lost control."
"Selena Cross believes M-17 belongs to her family."
"Caleb believes Bennett Capital belongs to him."
"Mason is desperate."
"And now a child has been born whose existence ties every branch of the conspiracy together."
My daughter.
Harrison looked at me.
"Your daughter isn't merely evidence."
"She's leverage."
My blood ran cold.
"If anyone comes near her—"
"They already have."
Harrison interrupted.
He slid his phone across the table.
A security photograph filled the screen.
A woman entering the hotel where my mother and baby were staying.
Gray coat.
Dark glasses.
Silver hair.
May you like
Evelyn Bennett.
The timestamp was three minutes earlier.
