Chapter 17 - THE COUNTERATTACK

At 9:00 the next morning, Harrison Bennett called a press conference.

Every major financial outlet expected a corporate announcement.

Instead, I walked onto the stage.

Luka stood beside me.

My father stood behind us.

Antonio watched through a secure video link from the hospital.

Mason sat in the front row.

He looked terrified.

I was terrified too.

But I spoke anyway.

"For nearly thirty years, patients connected to St. Catherine's fertility network were victims of unauthorized genetic substitutions, falsified medical records, and fraudulent paternity documentation."

Cameras erupted.

Reporters shouted.

I continued.

"We possess evidence identifying multiple victims."

"We will not release their names."

"We will not participate in genetic blackmail."

More shouting.

"Every affected family will receive private legal notification and independent testing at no cost."

"Every victim will control their own disclosure."

"And every person responsible for altering medical records will be referred for prosecution."

Caleb's threat died in real time.

He could still release names.

But if he did, he wouldn't be exposing a secret conspiracy.

He would be publicly attacking identified victims of medical fraud.

The narrative changed.

The power changed.

By noon, three M-17 families came forward voluntarily.

Then five.

Then nine.

They didn't blame one another.

They blamed the people who had manipulated them.

Caleb's leverage collapsed.

Bennett Capital's board suspended Mason pending investigation into the Heir Project.

Harrison resigned as chairman.

St. Catherine announced an independent forensic audit.

The state attorney general opened a criminal investigation.

For the first time, truth was stronger than secrecy.

Then Caleb made his final move.

He released a recording.

Mason's voice.

Talking to Selena six months earlier.

"If the baby isn't biologically mine, we change the result."

Selena asked.

"And Avery?"

Mason answered.

"If she becomes a problem, we already have the psychiatric file."

The room went silent when reporters played it.

I watched Mason hear his own voice destroy him.

He didn't deny it.

He couldn't.

That evening, he came to the farmhouse.

Police had not arrested him yet.

His attorney arranged permission for him to collect personal documents.

I met him outside.

He looked broken.

"I heard the recording."

He nodded.

"I was scared."

"You were cruel."

"I know."

That surprised me.

No excuse.

No manipulation.

Just acknowledgment.

"I don't expect forgiveness."

"Good."

His eyes filled.

"I held Grace's hospital picture today."

I said nothing.

"I never held her."

"No."

"I walked away."

"Yes."

He looked down.

"I thought I was losing an inheritance."

"I didn't realize I was losing my family."

I wanted to hate him completely.

Life rarely gives us that simplicity.

"I hope someday you understand what you did."

"I already do."

"No."

I shook my head.

"You understand what it cost you."

"That's different."

He cried then.

Quietly.

I didn't comfort him.

Some consequences belong to the person who created them.

Before leaving, Mason handed me an envelope.

"I took this from Selena months ago."

"What is it?"

"One more DNA report."

I stared at him.

"Whose?"

His face went pale.

"Mine."

"And?"

He looked toward the house where Harrison was speaking with my father.

Then back at me.

"It doesn't compare me to Harrison."

"It compares me to Caleb."

My stomach tightened.

"We already know you're half-brothers."

Mason shook his head.

"No."

May you like

He whispered.

"We're not."
