Chapter 18 - THE FALSE VICTORY

The report was authentic.
Mason and Caleb shared no meaningful paternal relationship.
The original M-17 ledger was wrong.
Or deliberately incomplete.
That meant someone had changed Case One twice.
Noah reconstructed the records.
The donor listed in Thomas's copy had been substituted after Mason's birth.
The real donor identity had been hidden even from the whistleblowers.
Why?
Because the real identity was more dangerous.
Harrison came to the farmhouse that night.
Mason confronted him.
"Who is my biological father?"
Harrison looked devastated.
"I don't know."
Mason slammed the report onto the table.
"Stop lying."
"I'm not."
Then Evelyn called.
She had been listening somehow.
Her voice came through Mason's phone.
"I know."
Everyone froze.
Mason's face drained.
"Mom."
Evelyn laughed bitterly.
"You finally want the truth."
"Where are you?"
"That doesn't matter."
"Who is my father?"
A pause.
Then she answered.
"Samuel Cross."
Selena and Caleb's father.
Mason sat down slowly.
That meant Mason wasn't Caleb's half-brother.
He was Selena and Caleb's half-brother.
Selena had been sleeping with her own biological half-brother.
She hadn't known.
Neither had Mason.
The horror on his face was immediate.
Evelyn's voice cracked for the first time.
"Samuel never knew Mason was his."
"Neither did Selena."
"I altered the original records because I knew what would happen if anyone discovered it."
Mason covered his mouth.
I looked away.
The betrayal had become uglier than any inheritance.
M-17 had spent decades creating relationships between people who didn't know how they were biologically connected.
This was why the truth needed care.
Not secrecy.
Care.
Evelyn continued.
"Caleb discovered the original donor identity six months ago."
"He knew."
Mason lifted his head.
"He knew Selena and I were related?"
"Yes."
"And he didn't tell us?"
"No."
That was Caleb's final cruelty.
He had allowed his sister to continue the affair because it kept Mason controllable.
Selena learned the truth in custody.
She agreed to cooperate immediately.
She gave investigators every location Caleb used.
One address stood out.
An abandoned private laboratory beneath the original St. Catherine fertility building.
Police entered that night.
They found documents.
Burner phones.
Blackmail files.
And Evelyn Bennett.
Alive.
Caleb was gone again.
But he had left one final package addressed to me.
Inside was the last unopened DNA envelope.
My name was written on the front.
