Chapter 4: Evelyn’s Last Party

Evelyn Vale refused to believe her son had lost control.

She hosted lunch at the family estate and invited six influential friends.

Her plan was simple.

Appear calm.

Control the gossip.

Present Helena as an unstable wife taking revenge after a marital disagreement.

By one o’clock, every guest had arrived.

By one fifteen, the staff had received termination notices.

The estate manager entered the dining room carrying a sealed envelope.

“Mrs. Vale, I’m required to inform you that this property is owned by Northstar Residential Holdings.”

Evelyn stared at him.

“That company belongs to Adrian.”

“No, ma’am.”

The guests stopped eating.

Evelyn stood.

“This house has been in my family for decades.”

“The original house was sold seventeen years ago to cover tax debts,” the manager explained. “Mr. and Mrs. Vale have occupied the renovated property under a private-use agreement.”

Evelyn’s face reddened.

“Who owns it?”

A familiar voice answered from the doorway.

“I do.”

Helena entered with two attorneys and Detective Ortiz.

Evelyn’s guests exchanged uneasy glances.

“You dare come into my home?” Evelyn said.

Helena crossed the room slowly.

“I came for the necklace.”

Evelyn lifted her chin.

“You stole it.”

Detective Ortiz placed an evidence bag on the table.

Inside was the missing necklace.

“We recovered it from a locked drawer in your private sitting room.”

Evelyn’s confidence disappeared.

Celeste had secretly moved the necklace from the linen bucket to Evelyn’s drawer after the dinner.

The entire exchange had been captured.

Helena connected her tablet to the dining room television.

The recording played.

No one spoke.

When it ended, Evelyn looked at her friends.

Not one defended her.

“You planned to destroy my reputation,” Helena said.

Evelyn’s voice shook.

“You were never one of us.”

Helena gave a faint, tired smile.

“You’re right.”

She looked around the mansion.

“I spent years trying to become small enough to make this family comfortable.”

Then she faced the staff.

“You will receive full severance and new positions if you want them.”

Finally, she turned back to Evelyn.

“You have forty-eight hours to leave.”

Evelyn gripped the table for support.

Helena walked away.

Behind her, the last party Evelyn Vale would ever host ended in silence.
