Chapter 5: Celeste’s Insurance Policy

Celeste disappeared that evening.
Adrian called her sixteen times.
She answered on the seventeenth.
“Where are you?”
“Somewhere safe.”
“Safe from whom?”
“Your wife.”
Adrian paced through a rented hotel room.
“My wife isn’t dangerous.”
Celeste laughed bitterly.
“She just dismantled your company before breakfast.”
“She wants to frighten me.”
“No, Adrian. She wants the truth.”
“What truth?”
Celeste remained silent.
Adrian stopped pacing.
“What did you do?”
“I protected us.”
“There is no ‘us’ if you don’t tell me what is happening.”
Celeste exhaled.
Two years earlier, she had learned Adrian was quietly moving money from Vale Meridian into overseas accounts.
At first, she thought it was a tax strategy.
Then she discovered he was preparing for a hostile separation from Helena.
He intended to hide enough money to survive if Helena ever challenged him.
Celeste helped create the consulting firms.
She signed false invoices.
She transferred funds.
But she had kept copies of everything.
“My insurance policy,” she said.
Adrian’s voice turned cold.
“You kept evidence against me?”
“I kept evidence for myself.”
“You said you loved me.”
“I loved the future you promised.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
“Where are the files?”
“Not with me.”
“Then where?”
Celeste hesitated.
“With your mother.”
Adrian drove to the estate immediately.
He found Evelyn surrounded by half-packed boxes and broken picture frames.
“Where is Celeste’s drive?”
Evelyn looked confused.
“What drive?”
“The evidence.”
Evelyn stared at him.
“You told me those transfers were legal.”
Adrian’s silence answered her.
A car pulled into the courtyard.
Celeste stepped out with two federal investigators.
Adrian moved toward the window.
“No.”
Celeste entered the house holding a small silver flash drive.
“I made an agreement,” she said.
“You betrayed me.”
She looked at him without apology.
“You taught me that loyalty belongs to the person holding the power.”
The investigators approached Adrian.
At that exact moment, his phone rang.
Helena.
He answered.
“Did you send them?”
“No,” Helena replied. “Celeste did.”
Adrian gripped the phone.
“What do you want from me?”
“The truth.”
“And if I give it to you?”
May you like
Helena’s voice remained calm.
“Then you might finally save something.”
