Chapter 12 - THE FORGED CONSENT

My signature appeared on twelve documents.

Perfect.

Every curve.

Every hesitation.

Even the strange upward stroke I made in the final letter of my first name.

They weren't photocopies.

They were digital reproductions created from dozens of samples.

Bianca had access to contracts I signed.

So did Julian.

So did hundreds of employees.

But only a handful of people understood which documents mattered.

The forged consent authorized transfer of six Vale properties into a restructuring vehicle.

That vehicle was controlled by Carrow.

“If filed and accepted, could they actually take the land?” I asked.

Margaret shook her head.

“Not permanently.”

“How temporarily?”

“Long enough to create chaos.”

“How long?”

“Months.”

Months were enough.

A luxury hotel without stable ownership could lose lenders, guests, employees, insurance, permits.

Richard didn't need to win.

He only needed the dispute to become expensive.

I called Julian again.

No answer.

Then a text arrived.

DON'T GO HOME.

I read it twice.

Another appeared.

THEY KNOW ABOUT THE TRUST AUTHENTICATION DEVICE.

My heart stopped.

The Vale Trust used layered authorization.

Signatures alone weren't enough for major transfers.

A hardware device generated rotating authentication codes.

Only three existed.

My father had one.

Margaret controlled one under legal custody.

And I had one.

Mine was inside the safe in my Manhattan townhouse.

I called security.

No answer.

Victor called the monitoring company.

The alarm had been disabled nine minutes earlier.

We were already moving before he finished speaking.

Police reached the townhouse first.

The front door showed no damage.

Inside, nothing looked disturbed.

The safe stood open.

My authentication device was gone.

On the bedroom floor lay one object.

My grandmother's emerald pendant.

Bianca had returned it.

Or someone wanted me to believe she had.

A note sat underneath.

YOU SHOULD HAVE WALKED AWAY WHEN JULIAN TOLD YOU TO.

Margaret stared at it.

“This is Richard.”

“How do you know?”

“Because Julian never warns twice.”

I hated that she was right.

Julian's arrogance was direct.

Richard's cruelty was theatrical.

My phone vibrated.

A location pin.

No sender name.

A warehouse in Brooklyn.

Then one message.

COME ALONE IF YOU WANT THE DEVICE.

Victor immediately said no.

Margaret said absolutely not.

I agreed with both of them.

Then I sent the location to police.

We surrounded the warehouse.

It was empty.

No Richard.

No Bianca.

No device.

Only a chair beneath a hanging light.

And a laptop.

The screen turned on when we entered.

A prerecorded video began.

Richard Mercer appeared.

Older than the photographs.

Gray hair.

Thin face.

Sharp eyes.

“Elena.”

My stomach tightened.

“If you're watching this, you still believe this is about property.”

He smiled.

“It isn't.”

Behind him, another person entered the frame.

Julian.

He was younger in the recording.

Maybe twenty-five.

Richard placed a hand on his shoulder.

“My son promised me years ago that he would put a Vale in exactly the position you're standing in now.”

Julian looked toward the camera.

His face was unreadable.

Richard continued.

“And your husband always keeps his promises.”

May you like

The video ended.

For the first time, I wondered whether every explanation Julian had given me was another layer of the same lie.
