Chapter 5 - SIX O'CLOCK

The emergency board meeting began at 6:02 a.m.

Julian arrived at 5:54.

He wasn't wearing a tie.

I had never seen him attend a board meeting without one.

Bianca wasn't with him.

His attorney was.

That told me he understood enough to be frightened.

When Julian entered the conference room and saw me sitting beside my father, he stopped.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Nine years.

Thousands of breakfasts.

Hundreds of flights.

Arguments.

Birthdays.

Anniversaries.

Plans whispered in bed.

And now we sat on opposite sides of a polished walnut table surrounded by attorneys.

“Elena.”

“Julian.”

His eyes moved toward my father.

“Thomas.”

My father didn't answer.

Samuel Grant opened the meeting.

“Thank you for attending on short notice.”

Julian sat.

“What exactly is this?”

Samuel folded his hands.

“An emergency review of operational authority.”

“On whose request?”

Samuel looked at me.

Julian followed his gaze.

His expression changed.

“No.”

I said nothing.

He laughed once.

“This is ridiculous.”

Samuel slid a document across the table.

“As of midnight, several provisions under the property management agreements were triggered.”

“Triggered by what?”

“Your removal of Elena Vale Mercer from Aurelia Grand premises.”

Julian looked at me.

“I removed my wife from a hotel.”

My father spoke for the first time.

“You removed the controlling beneficiary from trust property.”

Julian stared at him.

“What controlling beneficiary?”

The silence was extraordinary.

It was the exact moment his world cracked.

Samuel opened a presentation.

A corporate ownership chart appeared on the wall.

Mercer International Hospitality sat near the center.

Around it were dozens of companies.

Aurelia Management.

Vale Coastal Holdings.

Mariner Property Trust.

VHL Capital.

Crown Pacific Leasing.

Julian recognized the names.

Of course he did.

He had signed agreements with them for years.

What he had never done was ask who stood behind them.

Samuel began.

“The Aurelia Grand property is owned by Mariner Property Trust.”

Next slide.

“Mariner Property Trust is controlled by Vale Coastal Holdings.”

Next.

“Vale Coastal Holdings is a subsidiary of the Vale Family Trust.”

Julian's face emptied.

Samuel continued through property after property.

Maui.

Napa Valley.

Miami.

Cabo.

Santorini.

Amalfi.

Turks and Caicos.

Every time, the chain ended in the same place.

Vale.

Finally, Julian looked at me.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“All of it.”

He leaned back.

The attorney beside him whispered something.

Julian ignored him.

“You let me think—”

“I let you build a company.”

“You let me think it was mine.”

“You own part of Mercer International.”

“Part?”

“Thirty-one percent.”

His jaw tightened.

“I founded it.”

“Yes.”

“With you.”

“Yes.”

“Then who owns the rest?”

Samuel answered.

“Several investment entities.”

Julian stared at him.

“Which entities?”

Samuel changed slides.

The largest shareholder appeared.

VHL STRATEGIC PARTNERS.

Forty-three percent.

Julian's voice went quiet.

“Who owns VHL?”

My father smiled without warmth.

“Elena.”

Julian looked at me.

For the first time since I had known him, he had absolutely nothing to say.

Then Samuel moved to the final agenda item.

“Mr. Mercer, pending investigation into unauthorized financial transfers, the board will vote on temporary suspension of your position as chief executive.”

Julian stood so quickly his chair struck the wall.

“You can't do that.”

Samuel looked around the table.

“We can.”

Julian pointed at me.

“This is because of our marriage.”

“No,” I said.

“This is because of sixty million dollars.”

His face changed.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

So did Margaret.

And in that tiny reaction, I knew something terrible.

Julian had known about Morrow House Ventures all along.
