Chapter 19 - BENEATH THE RESORT

The original Aurelia Grand had been built over Richard's old hotel.

Not renovated.

Built over.

Parts of the original foundation remained below the new structure.

During construction, my grandfather insisted one basement section remain sealed.

I had never questioned it.

Neither had Julian.

At least, not then.

My father finally explained.

“Richard stored records there.”

“What records?”

“Not financial.”

“Then what?”

He looked toward Margaret.

She answered.

“Political.”

Richard's hotels had hosted wealthy businessmen, politicians, judges, foreign investors.

He secretly recorded guests.

Not every room.

Specific suites.

Specific meetings.

Insurance.

Leverage.

Blackmail.

My grandfather discovered part of the system after foreclosure.

Most recordings were destroyed.

But one archive disappeared.

Richard believed Vale had taken it.

“Did we?”

My father shook his head.

“We never found it.”

“Then why does Richard think it's still there?”

“Because that's what my father told him.”

I stared at him.

“Grandfather lied.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To keep Richard searching in the wrong place.”

“Where was the archive?”

My father looked at the emerald pendant.

“I think your mother found it.”

A terrible possibility formed.

My mother died in a car accident eight years earlier.

Police called it mechanical failure.

We had never questioned it.

Until now.

“Did Richard know Mom had the pendant?”

“I don't know.”

I was already moving.

The Aurelia Grand went into security lockdown.

Guests were quietly relocated from lower levels.

Police searched the basement.

Nothing.

Then Marcus, the night manager, remembered something.

Three weeks earlier, Julian had requested old architectural plans.

He said it concerned plumbing.

We pulled the blueprints.

Behind the wine cellar was a void.

A space not shown on modern plans.

We opened the wall at 1:32 a.m.

A narrow staircase descended into darkness.

Below the resort Julian called his was the skeleton of his father's old hotel.

Concrete corridors.

Rusting pipes.

Abandoned service rooms.

And one steel door.

Fresh footprints marked the dust.

Richard had arrived first.

We heard voices beyond the door.

One belonged to Richard.

The other to Julian.

Police moved ahead.

I stayed behind them.

Inside the room were old shelves filled with tapes.

Hundreds.

Maybe thousands.

Richard stood near a desk.

Julian sat against the wall.

Blood marked the side of his forehead.

He was conscious.

Richard held no weapon.

His power had never depended on one.

He looked at me and smiled.

“There she is.”

Police ordered him to raise his hands.

Richard laughed.

“You think this room belongs to you?”

I looked around.

“No.”

He seemed surprised.

“This belongs to the people you recorded.”

His smile faded.

Then he looked at Julian.

“Tell her.”

Julian closed his eyes.

“Don't.”

Richard picked up one cassette.

“This one is her mother.”

My heart stopped.

“What did you say?”

Richard held up the tape.

“Your mother found me before she died.”

I stepped forward.

Police stopped me.

Richard continued.

“She knew what Julian had done.”

I looked at Julian.

His face was filled with horror.

“What did Julian do?”

Richard smiled.

Finally, he had found the wound he wanted.

“He helped me disappear.”

I already knew that.

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

“Not Argentina.”

He pointed toward the shelves.

“He helped me remove evidence from this room.”

Julian whispered.

“I didn't know what was on the tapes.”

Richard laughed.

“He always says that.”

Then he placed the cassette into an old player.

My mother's voice filled the room.

Clear.

Calm.

“You stay away from my daughter.”

Richard answered.

“You should ask your son-in-law why I'm still alive.”

Then Julian's voice appeared on the tape.

Younger.

Panicked.

“Adriana, please listen to me.”

My knees nearly gave way.

My mother had spoken to Julian about Richard.

Before her death.

And Julian had never told me.

The tape continued.

May you like

Then my mother's final words changed everything.

“Elena can never know what happened the night she met you.”
