Chapter 6 - THE WITNESS WHO RAN

By afternoon, the video from the ballroom had been authenticated.

It showed every moment clearly.

Celeste changed direction deliberately.

She struck Lucy with her shoulder.

She blamed the child.

She slapped her.

Nora pushed Celeste away.

Daniel seized Nora’s wrist.

He ignored Lucy’s injuries.

Then he threw his wife across the marble.

The audio was even worse.

It captured Daniel saying, “You both deserved it.”

Detective Ramirez expected the video to be enough for arrest warrants.

Then one of the ballroom witnesses disappeared.

Evan Mercer was Hale Meridian’s junior finance director.

He had been standing less than ten feet from Lucy when Celeste struck her.

Security footage showed Evan lifting his phone.

He had recorded the entire incident.

When police contacted him, he promised to provide the video.

Two hours later, he stopped answering calls.

His apartment was empty.

His car remained in the garage.

His passport was missing.

Daniel’s attorney claimed Evan had taken an unplanned vacation.

Ramirez did not believe it.

Neither did Charles.

Evan had worked closely with Daniel on the consulting payments.

If he knew about the financial scheme, he might have been frightened into running.

Marcus examined hotel exit footage.

Evan had left the gala through a service corridor at 9:02 p.m.

A dark vehicle waited outside.

The license plate belonged to a Hale Meridian security contractor.

The company owner was Daniel’s cousin.

Charles sent the information to police.

Meanwhile, Daniel appeared on television.

He stood outside his attorney’s office wearing a dark overcoat and a carefully wounded expression.

He told reporters that his marriage had suffered privately for years.

He claimed Nora had become unstable after Lucy’s birth.

He said Charles Whitmore was using wealth to manipulate a painful family disagreement.

“My only concern is my daughter,” Daniel said into the cameras.

“At this time, I ask the public not to rush to judgment.”

Nora watched the statement from the hotel suite.

Lucy was asleep in the next room.

Charles stood beside the window with his arms folded.

“He is using the same strategy he used with you,” he said.

“What strategy?”

“He speaks calmly while doing something cruel.”

Nora turned off the television.

“He knows people trust calm men in expensive coats.”

“They also trust evidence.”

Her phone rang.

The caller identification showed Lucy’s school.

Nora answered immediately.

The headmistress sounded nervous.

“Mrs. Hale, a man came to the school asking for information about Lucy.”

“What kind of information?”

“Her schedule.”

“Did you give it to him?”

“Of course not.”

“Who was he?”

“He said he worked for your husband.”

Nora’s blood turned cold.

Lucy was not at school.

Daniel did not know that.

“He wanted to know when she would return,” the headmistress continued.

“He also asked which entrance her classroom used.”

Charles was already calling security.

Within minutes, additional guards were placed around the hotel.

Police were notified.

The school provided surveillance footage.

The man was identified as the same contractor whose vehicle had collected Evan Mercer.

His name was Grant Pike.

Daniel’s cousin.

The investigation shifted instantly.

What had begun as assault and evidence tampering now included possible witness intimidation and an attempt to locate Lucy.

Ramirez called Nora.

“We are seeking Pike for questioning.”

“Do you think he was trying to take my daughter?”

“We do not know.”

Nora looked through the bedroom doorway at Lucy.

The child slept with Charles’s jacket folded beside her.

Nora’s fear became something stronger.

“I want protection orders against Daniel, Celeste, Sylvia, and anyone working for them.”

“We are preparing them.”

“Prepare them faster.”

That evening, a hotel employee delivered an envelope to the suite.

It had no return address.

Inside was a memory card.

A handwritten note was folded around it.

I am sorry I stayed silent.

Daniel knows where Evan is.

Nora gave the card to Charles.

They played it on an isolated laptop.

The video showed Daniel and Celeste in the ballroom service corridor twenty minutes before the attack.

They believed they were alone.

Celeste spoke first.

“Once Nora is declared unstable, you control the child’s trust.”

Daniel adjusted his cuff links.

“And once Charles dies, Lucy inherits enough voting shares to make us untouchable.”

“What if Nora refuses to sign?”

Daniel smiled.

“She won’t have a choice after tonight.”

The recording ended.

Charles looked at Nora.

“This was planned.”

Nora felt the truth settle heavily inside her.

Celeste had not struck Lucy because of spilled juice.

The assault had been designed to provoke Nora.

Daniel wanted witnesses to see Nora react.

He wanted to present her protective instinct as violence.

He wanted to steal her daughter and her inheritance in the same move.

Nora stared at the frozen screen.

“They used Lucy as bait.”

May you like

Charles closed the laptop.

“And that mistake will cost them everything.”
