Chapter 9 - DANIEL’S LAST PERFORMANCE
Daniel requested permission to speak with Nora.
The court denied him direct contact.
He responded by recording a public statement.
The video appeared online at midnight.
Daniel sat in a dark library beside a framed photograph of Lucy.
He spoke with a trembling voice.
He apologized for “allowing a family disagreement to become physical.”
He said he loved his daughter more than life.
He claimed Charles had manipulated Nora for years and was now using her to take control of Hale Meridian.
Then he cried.
The performance convinced some people.
Comments appeared beneath the video.
Maybe both sides were wrong.

Daniel understood public doubt.

This one came from Hale Meridian’s official account.
Daniel stood in the ballroom corridor before the gala.
He was speaking with Celeste.
“Once Nora is declared unstable, you control the child’s trust,” Celeste said.
“And once Charles dies, Lucy inherits enough voting shares to make us untouchable,” Daniel answered.
The video had been released by the company’s interim board with approval from investigators.
Public sympathy changed instantly.
Reporters surrounded Daniel’s apartment.
His law firm removed his biography from its website.
The state bar announced a disciplinary investigation.
Hale Meridian employees demanded his permanent removal.
Daniel’s carefully constructed image collapsed in less than six hours.
That afternoon, he violated the protection order.
He disconnected his electronic monitor and left his apartment through a maintenance exit.
Police issued an alert.
At 4:20 p.m., a black sedan approached the Whitmore Grand’s underground entrance.
The driver used a temporary Hale Meridian identification card.
Hotel security stopped the vehicle.
Daniel was in the back seat.
He carried a letter addressed to Lucy.
He also had a second passport hidden inside his coat.
Security detained him until police arrived.
When Detective Ramirez asked why he came, Daniel claimed he wanted to apologize.
The contents of his bag suggested otherwise.
It held ten thousand dollars in cash.
Children’s clothing.
A sedative prescribed to an unknown patient.
And airline tickets departing that evening.
Nora learned about the arrest while decorating cookies with Lucy.
Her hand froze above a bowl of blue icing.
“Was he trying to take her?”
Ramirez did not soften the answer.
“We believe so.”
Nora looked toward Lucy.
The child was laughing because Charles had accidentally covered his sleeve with flour.
The sound felt impossibly fragile.
“What happens now?”
“His bail will be revoked.”
“Will he stay in custody?”
“Yes.”
“Are you certain?”
“Yes.”
Nora stepped into the hallway so Lucy would not hear.
“I want every charge filed.”
“They will be.”
“I do not care what his family says.”
“We do not either.”
Daniel appeared before a judge that evening.
His attorney argued that he suffered from emotional distress.
The prosecutor presented the cash, passport, tickets, and violation of the protection order.
Bail was revoked.
Daniel was taken into custody pending trial.
As officers led him away, he saw Nora in the back of the courtroom.
For a moment, his expression became the same one he had worn throughout their marriage.
Commanding.
Expectant.
He mouthed one word.
