Chapter 7 - THE CHILD IN THE INTERVIEW ROOM
The next morning, a family court judge granted Nora temporary sole custody of Lucy.
Daniel was ordered to have no contact with either of them.
He was also prohibited from approaching Lucy’s school, the Whitmore Grand, or any Whitmore property.
Daniel’s attorneys protested.
The judge watched the ballroom video.
The protest ended quickly.
Celeste was arrested outside her apartment for assaulting a minor.
She appeared shocked when officers placed her in handcuffs.
Photographers captured her silver manicure covering her face as she entered the police vehicle.
Daniel was arrested two hours later.
His charges included assault, evidence tampering, conspiracy, and obstruction.
More charges were expected.
He posted bail before sunset.
The judge ordered him to surrender his passport and wear an electronic monitor.
Daniel left the courthouse without speaking.
Sylvia shouted at reporters instead.
“This is a conspiracy created by a bitter wife.”
The statement aired repeatedly.
Nora refused interview requests.
She cared about only one thing.
Lucy.
A child psychologist named Dr. Hannah Brooks began meeting with her at the hotel.
The sessions revealed that the ballroom incident was not the first time Celeste had frightened her.
For months, Celeste had appeared at the Hale residence when Nora was away.
Daniel told Lucy that Celeste was helping with company matters.
Celeste warned the child not to mention the visits.
“She said Mommy would leave if I told,” Lucy explained.
Dr. Brooks asked whether Celeste had hurt her before.
Lucy hesitated.
Then she described an afternoon when Celeste squeezed her arm until it bruised because she interrupted a conversation.
She described Daniel telling her she was too sensitive.
She described Sylvia making her stand alone in the hallway during a family dinner because she spilled water.
Nora listened from the observation room.
Each sentence felt like another door opening inside a house she thought she knew.
Daniel’s cruelty had not begun at the gala.
It had only become visible there.
After the session, Nora sat beside Lucy on the floor.
A box of crayons rested between them.
Lucy drew three figures.
One was Nora.
One was herself.
The third was Charles.
They stood beneath a large yellow sun.
“Where is Daddy?” Nora asked carefully.
Lucy chose a black crayon.
She drew a small square far from the others.
“He’s in his office.”
Nora swallowed.
“Do you miss him?”
Lucy thought for a long moment.
“I miss when I thought he liked me.”
Nora pulled her daughter into her arms.
She did not promise that Daniel would change.
She did not tell Lucy that families always stayed together.
She told her something more truthful.
“You are loved.”
“Even when I spill things?”
“Especially then.”
“Even when I cry?”
“Yes.”
“Even when I make mistakes?”
“Always.”
Lucy rested her head against Nora.
Later that afternoon, Detective Ramirez arrived.
Evan Mercer had been found.
A gas station employee recognized his photograph and called police.
Evan was hiding in a roadside motel nearly two hundred miles away.
He was alive.
He was terrified.
Grant Pike had threatened to hurt Evan’s younger brother unless Evan disappeared.
Pike ordered him to destroy financial records and surrender his phone.
Evan secretly kept copies.
He agreed to cooperate in exchange for protection.
The records showed that Daniel and Celeste had stolen nearly thirty-two million dollars from Hale Meridian.
They moved the money through false consulting agreements.
Some financed luxury apartments.
Some paid Sylvia’s debts.
More than nine million dollars had already been transferred overseas.
Evan also revealed something else.
Daniel planned to blame everything on Nora.
He had created documents showing that she approved the transfers through a charitable foundation.
Her electronic signature had been copied.
Her name appeared on accounts she had never seen.
Nora looked at Ramirez.
“Can you prove the signatures were forged?”
“We believe so.”
“Believe?”
“Evan has emails in which Daniel ordered the documents created.”
Charles stepped forward.
“Then release my daughter’s name from every account immediately.”
Ramirez nodded.
“We are working with federal investigators.”
Nora stared through the window at the city.
Daniel had planned to take her child.
Her inheritance.
Her freedom.
And when the scheme collapsed, he intended to leave her carrying the blame.
For years, she thought his greatest weapon was anger.
