Chapter 1 – The Woman Who Walked Out of the Freezer

The moment Nathan's footsteps faded into the night, I looked at my watch.

11:52 p.m.

Four minutes.

Exactly as Donovan had instructed.

"If he believes you're panicking, he'll stay nearby."

"If he believes you're already dying..."

"He'll celebrate."

I walked through the maze of frozen pallets until I reached the rear ventilation shaft.

The panel looked untouched.

Only I knew the lower screw had been loosened that afternoon.

I pulled.

The cover came away silently.

A narrow maintenance passage stretched beyond it.

Cold.

Dark.

But open.

I crawled through the passage until I emerged inside an unused equipment room behind Unit Seven.

Waiting there were Donovan and two investigators employed by my company's insurance carrier.

Neither said a word.

One investigator quietly checked his watch.

"He's still inside the warehouse office."

Donovan nodded.

"Good."

A live feed from the mirrored security cameras played across a tablet.

Nathan was pouring champagne.

Miriam raised her glass.

"To new beginnings."

Paige laughed.

"By breakfast she'll be history."

Every word was recorded.

Every smile preserved.

I looked at the screen without speaking.

Ten years of marriage.

Reduced to a toast over my death.

Around 2:00 a.m., another luxury sedan entered the warehouse.

Lila stepped out.

She wore an expensive white coat and carefully rested one hand on her stomach.

Nathan kissed her.

"So tomorrow..."

"...it's finally ours."

She smiled.

"Our future starts in the morning."

Then she asked the question that surprised everyone.

"You updated your will, right?"

Nathan frowned.

"What?"

"I won't marry a man whose assets are still tied up."

Donovan looked at me.

"They don't even trust each other."

I answered quietly.

"They never loved."

"They negotiated."

Before dawn, Donovan secured every recording, camera backup, maintenance log, and access record.

Nothing would disappear.

Nothing could be altered.

Nathan had planned the perfect accident.

Instead...

He had documented every step himself.
