Chapter 2 – The Morning the Lie Froze Solid

At 7:03 a.m., Nathan dialed emergency services.
His voice cracked with rehearsed panic.
"My wife went into Unit Seven last night."
"She never came back out."
"I think she's trapped."
Police officers, firefighters, and emergency technicians arrived within minutes.
Employees gathered outside the warehouse.
Nathan stood wrapped in a blanket, pretending to shiver.
The freezer door swung open.
Empty.
Rows of frozen seafood stretched into darkness.
No Evelyn.
Nathan rushed inside.
"Evelyn!"
No answer.
The lead detective frowned.
"Where is she?"
Nathan turned pale.
"I..."
"I don't understand."
A calm voice echoed from behind the crowd.
"I do."
Every head turned.
I stepped forward beside Donovan.
Alive.
Composed.
Nathan staggered backward.
"You..."
"That's impossible."
"I was supposed to die?"
I asked.
He said nothing.
Donovan handed the detective several sealed evidence envelopes.
"These contain mirrored surveillance footage, authenticated audio recordings, maintenance reports, and access logs from HarborLock Cold Storage."
The detective accepted them.
"What exactly do they show?"
Donovan answered,
"They show that this was not an equipment failure."
"It was a planned attempt to trap Mrs. Whitmore inside the freezer."
Miriam stepped forward immediately.
"This is absurd."
Donovan pressed a small remote.
A portable speaker began to play.
Miriam's unmistakable voice filled the loading dock.
"If Evelyn dies... you become the grieving husband."
Then Nathan answered.
"I know."
Silence spread across the warehouse.
No one moved.
No one spoke.
The detective slowly looked at Nathan.
"Sir..."
"I believe we'd like to ask you some questions."
As officers continued their investigation, another surprise emerged.
Medical records obtained during the investigation did not support Lila's earlier claim that she was pregnant.
Questioned separately, she admitted she had fabricated the story to pressure Nathan into promising marriage and financial security.
Nathan stared at her in disbelief.
"You lied to me."
Lila gave a bitter laugh.
"You were planning to profit from your wife's death."
"You don't get to complain about lies."

For the first time, Nathan understood that everyone around him had been pursuing their own interests.
Including the people he thought were on his side.
