Chapter 3 – The Coldest Lesson

One year later...

HarborLock Logistics had changed.

Every warehouse emergency release had been replaced.

Independent safety inspections became mandatory.

Employees were encouraged to report hazards without fear of retaliation.

Unit Seven remained in service.

But one addition stood beside its entrance.

A bronze plaque.

Integrity protects more lives than steel ever can.

People often stopped to read it.

Few knew the story behind those words.

I did.

One quiet evening, Donovan and I stood overlooking the harbor as cargo ships disappeared into the Atlantic sunset.

"You could've sold everything," he said.

"Started over somewhere else."

I smiled.

"Why should I leave?"

"I wasn't the one who betrayed my vows."

He laughed softly.

"Fair point."

The legal proceedings eventually concluded.

Nathan, Miriam, and Paige each faced the consequences of their own actions through the legal process based on the evidence collected during the investigation.

Lila disappeared from the headlines almost as quickly as she had entered Nathan's life.

As for me...

I stopped measuring wealth by property, warehouses, or shipping contracts.

I measured it by something far rarer.

Peace.

On the anniversary of that freezing night, I walked alone through Unit Seven.

The compressors hummed exactly as they always had.

The air was just as cold.

But it no longer frightened me.

I placed one gloved hand against the steel door.

A year earlier, Nathan believed this freezer would become my grave.

Instead...

It became the place where the truth was preserved.

Cold cannot hide a crime.

Greed cannot sustain a lie.

And a locked door means nothing...

...when the person holding the key is the one walking into the trap.

I switched off the lights, closed the freezer door behind me, and walked toward the sunrise.

This time...

Free.
