Chapter 18 - When My Father Chose the Truth

The news broke on a Monday morning.

ELIAS VALE COOPERATING WITH FEDERAL INVESTIGATION INTO HISTORIC MERIDIAN OPERATIONS.

Reporters surrounded Vale Dominion.

Clients demanded answers.

Governments denied involvement.

Former executives hired attorneys.

Dad stepped down as chief executive before noon.

He did not ask me to replace him.

I was grateful.

For once, nobody was deciding my future.

He was not immediately arrested.

His cooperation mattered.

So did the evidence he provided.

But there would be hearings.

Investigations.

Civil claims.

Perhaps criminal charges.

Dad accepted that.

When I visited him at home, he was sitting alone on the back porch.

No security team nearby.

No encrypted screens.

Just coffee.

“You regret it?”

I asked.

“Some parts.”

“Which?”

“That you had to see me clearly.”

I sat beside him.

“I needed to.”

He nodded.

After a while, he said.

“Your mother wanted me to leave Meridian years before Victor’s accident.”

I looked at him.

“You never told me.”

“She thought it was changing me.”

“Was she right?”

“Yes.”

I waited.

“Victor implied he knew Mom.”

“He did.”

“How well?”

Dad smiled sadly.

“She was our attorney.”

That surprised me.

“Mom?”

“She wrote the original ethical charter for Meridian.”

I almost laughed.

My mother, whom I remembered baking pancakes and gardening on Sundays, had helped design safeguards for one of the world’s most secretive intelligence alliances.

“She left when Victor began breaking the rules.”

Dad continued.

“She nearly convinced me to leave too.”

“Nearly.”

“Yes.”

His regret was quiet.

I reached for his hand.

“I’m not taking over Vale Dominion.”

“I know.”

“You’re not disappointed?”

“No.”

He smiled faintly.

“Maybe relieved.”

Ashford Global faced a different future.

The board formally removed Nathan.

Several executives resigned.

The company entered a restructuring agreement.

I remained interim chair just long enough to stabilize payroll, protect legitimate customers, and preserve employee pensions.

Then I announced that Ashford Global would be divided.

The corrupt subsidiaries would be liquidated.

The legitimate logistics business would continue under independent management.

Malcolm Reed resigned from the board.

He publicly admitted withholding information.

His son entered treatment for gambling addiction.

Agent Torres returned to active duty.

Jonathan Mercer was charged with kidnapping, conspiracy, attempted murder, financial crimes, and dozens of related offenses.

Halcyon Maritime’s board removed him within hours.

Celeste survived surgery.

Her legal future was complicated.

She had committed crimes.

She had also provided evidence.

Federal prosecutors were not sentimental.

Neither was I.

Then came Nathan’s trial.

His attorneys offered a plea.

Fraud.

Conspiracy.

Obstruction.

Aggravated assault.

He would serve years in prison.

He asked to see me before accepting.

I almost refused.

Then I remembered one sentence from Blackthorn.

May you like

Now maybe you’ll remember your place.

I decided Nathan deserved to hear exactly where my place was.
