Chapter 2 - The Woman Behind Celeste Monroe

I woke in a private hospital suite six hours later.

My father was sitting beside the window.

His coat was gone.

His sleeves were rolled to his elbows.

He looked less like the legendary founder of Vale Dominion and more like the father who used to sit beside my bed when thunderstorms frightened me.

For a moment, I almost allowed myself to believe the worst was over.

Then I remembered Celeste’s words.

You were.

“Who is she?”

Dad looked up.

“Claire.”

“Don’t.”

My voice came out sharper than I expected.

“Don’t tell me I need rest.”

He was silent.

“Celeste knew you.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Dad leaned back.

“Her real name is not Celeste Monroe.”

I stared at him.

“It’s Cassandra Sloane.”

The name meant nothing to me.

Dad saw that.

“Twenty-three years ago, her father was one of my partners.”

“Vale Dominion?”

“Before Vale Dominion existed.”

He stood and walked toward the window.

“Victor Sloane and I built a private financial intelligence firm together.”

I had heard pieces of that history.

Dad had started with corporate investigations.

Fraud.

Asset tracing.

Sanctions compliance.

Then his firm had become something much larger.

“What happened?”

“Victor believed information should be sold to whoever paid the most.”

Dad turned toward me.

“I disagreed.”

“That sounds polite.”

“It ended violently.”

I sat straighter.

Dad continued.

“Victor began selling banking vulnerabilities, shipping intelligence, and private corporate records to criminal organizations.”

“What did you do?”

“I exposed him.”

The room seemed suddenly colder.

“He lost everything?”

“Yes.”

“And Celeste was his daughter.”

“Cassandra was fourteen.”

I closed my eyes.

Pieces began sliding together.

“She came after me because of you.”

“Possibly.”

“Possibly?”

Dad’s silence answered me.

I pushed the blanket away.

Pain pulled through my body, but anger was stronger.

“You knew she was connected to Sloane?”

“Not until six weeks ago.”

“And you said nothing?”

“We were still confirming it.”

“Nathan was sleeping with her.”

“I know.”

“She was inside my home.”

“I know.”

“She convinced him I was stealing from him, sabotaging him, humiliating him.”

“I know.”

My eyes burned.

“And you let me stay.”

Dad looked as though I had struck him.

“You insisted on staying before we knew who she was.”

“You could have told me.”

“Yes.”

The answer stopped me.

No excuses.

No defense.

Just yes.

He lowered his voice.

“I was wrong.”

I looked away.

Dad rarely admitted mistakes.

That somehow made this worse.

“What did Sloane want?”

“We don’t know yet.”

“You said Nathan wasn’t the real target.”

“That was Cassandra speaking.”

“She sounded certain.”

Before Dad could answer, the door opened.

A federal investigator entered.

Special Agent Maya Torres.

I recognized her from Blackthorn Manor.

She carried a tablet and a sealed evidence envelope.

“Mrs. Ashford, we found something during the search of your husband’s headquarters.”

She placed the envelope on the table.

Inside was a photograph.

Me.

Entering a restaurant three months earlier.

Another photograph.

Me leaving my attorney’s office.

Another.

My father and me at a private airfield.

Another.

My car outside Blackthorn Manor.

I looked at Agent Torres.

“What is this?”

“We found more than four hundred photographs.”

My stomach tightened.

“Taken by whom?”

“We’re working on that.”

Dad stepped closer.

Torres swiped across the tablet.

“We also recovered a file from a hidden directory on Mr. Ashford’s personal server.”

She turned the screen toward me.

The folder contained one word.

HEIRESS.

Beneath it was my photograph.

My birth date.

My financial history.

My school records.

My marriage certificate.

And a document stamped CONFIDENTIAL.

VALE SUCCESSION STRUCTURE.

I looked at my father.

He no longer looked calm.

“What is that?”

He said nothing.

“Dad.”

His gaze remained on the screen.

Then Agent Torres opened the document.
