Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Without Nathan

Thirty-six hours after Blackthorn Manor, I walked into Ashford Global headquarters.

Every step hurt.

I wore a high-necked black suit.

Not because I wanted to look powerful.

Because I refused to let Nathan’s employees see what he had done to me.

Reporters filled the sidewalk.

“Mrs. Ashford, did your husband assault you?”

“Are you taking control of the company?”

“Did you know about the federal investigation?”

“Is your marriage over?”

I answered none of them.

Inside the building, the atmosphere was worse.

Employees whispered.

Senior executives avoided eye contact.

Security officers who once treated Nathan like royalty now wore federal visitor badges around their necks.

Rachel walked beside me.

“You can still leave.”

“No.”

“Good.”

She handed me a folder.

“Because they’re terrified.”

The boardroom doors opened.

Eleven directors sat around the long table.

Nathan’s chair at the head was empty.

For years, I had attended company events as his decorative wife.

Several people in that room had never once asked what I did before marriage.

Today every one of them stood when I entered.

Chairman Malcolm Reed cleared his throat.

“Mrs. Ashford.”

“Claire.”

He nodded.

“Claire.”

We sat.

Malcolm explained the company had enough liquidity for perhaps six weeks if customers did not cancel contracts.

“That assumes our credit lines remain intact.”

A director added.

“They won’t.”

Everyone turned toward me.

I opened the folder.

“Nathan pledged portions of Ashford Global’s port receivables as collateral for private borrowing.”

The chief financial officer looked stunned.

“How do you know that?”

“Because I found the agreements six months ago.”

Silence.

I continued.

“He moved the proceeds through supplier entities controlled by Celeste.”

A director whispered a curse.

Malcolm leaned forward.

“Can you prove this?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“At least three hundred eighty million dollars.”

The room erupted.

I waited.

Then I placed a flash drive on the table.

“There may be more.”

Malcolm stared at me.

“What do you want?”

“Full forensic access.”

“To what?”

“Everything.”

I met each director’s eyes.

“Accounts.”

“Contracts.”

“Executive communications.”

“Subsidiaries.”

“Shipping manifests.”

“Political consultants.”

“Overseas payments.”

The CFO swallowed.

“That would expose the company completely.”

“That is the point.”

One director shook his head.

“You’ll destroy shareholder value.”

“No.”

I said.

“Nathan already did.”

The room became quiet.

I pushed the flash drive toward Malcolm.

“You have two choices.”

“Hide what happened and let investigators find it first.”

“Or open the doors yourselves and prove there is still a company worth saving.”

Malcolm studied me for a long moment.

Then he called for a vote.

Nine minutes later, I became interim executive chair of Ashford Global.

Not CEO.

I did not want Nathan’s throne.

I wanted access to what he had hidden beneath it.

After the meeting, I entered his private office.

The walls were covered with photographs of Nathan shaking hands with senators, CEOs, investors, and foreign ministers.

His desk remained sealed with federal evidence tape.

I walked toward the bookshelf.

Something felt wrong.

One shelf was slightly misaligned.

I pressed against it.

Nothing happened.

Then I noticed a tiny biometric reader beneath the frame.

Rachel frowned.

“Federal agents searched this room.”

“Apparently not everything.”

I called Agent Torres.

Two hours later, technicians opened the hidden compartment.

Inside were no cash stacks.

No diamonds.

No passports.

Only a black notebook.

On the first page were names.

Bankers.

Judges.

Port officials.

Politicians.

Executives.

Beside each name was a number.

Rachel whispered.

“Payments?”

I shook my head.

Because I recognized the numbering system.

My father had taught it to me as a child.

It was an intelligence classification code used by Vale Dominion.

And beside the final name was a single handwritten word.

ELIAS.
