Chapter 1 - THE HELICOPTERS

Nathan Ashford stopped laughing when the first helicopter crossed the southern lawn.

The sound rolled over Blackthorn Manor like thunder.

A second helicopter appeared behind it.

Then a third.

Celeste Monroe rose slowly from the chair beside him.

Her confidence vanished.

Nathan stared at me.

“What did you do?”

I still had the sapphire pendant around my neck.

The tiny recording device hidden inside it had captured everything that happened that night.

But more importantly, it had captured what Nathan had said when he believed nobody would ever hear him.

I lifted my phone.

“You should probably check your messages.”

Nathan grabbed his phone.

Thirty-seven notifications covered the screen.

His primary corporate account had been frozen.

Then another account.

Then another.

Ashford International’s legal department demanded an emergency conference.

Three board members had resigned.

Two federal investigators had requested access to company records.

Nathan’s face drained of color.

“This is impossible.”

Celeste stepped toward him.

“Nathan, what accounts?”

He ignored her.

Another alert appeared.

ASHFORD INTERNATIONAL — EMERGENCY BOARD MEETING CALLED.

My father had moved faster than even I expected.

Nathan looked toward me.

“Who exactly is your father?”

Celeste answered before I could.

“Arthur Hartwell.”

Nathan stared at her.

“What?”

Celeste backed away.

For the first time that night, she looked frightened.

“The Hartwells own Hartwell Capital.”

Nathan’s hand tightened around his phone.

“That investment firm?”

Celeste shook her head.

“Not just an investment firm.”

She swallowed.

“They control three banks, two insurance groups, and enough voting shares to influence half the companies you borrowed from.”

Nathan turned toward me.

“You told me your father was retired.”

“He is.”

I allowed myself a faint smile.

“He retired from running the company.”

The helicopters descended beyond the trees.

Black SUVs were already approaching the front gates.

Nathan stepped toward me.

“You planned this.”

“No.”

I looked directly into his eyes.

“You planned it.”

I touched the pendant.

“I just recorded you doing it.”

His expression changed.

For the first time, Nathan understood that the woman he had spent years calling powerless had been watching him carefully.

Celeste moved toward the door.

I noticed immediately.

“So soon?”

She froze.

Nathan turned.

“Where are you going?”

Celeste forced a smile.

“Nowhere.”

Her hand was already inside her handbag.

Then I heard the quiet click of a zipper.

She removed a passport.

Nathan stared at it.

“You were planning to leave?”

Celeste said nothing.

A pounding came from the front entrance.

Nathan shouted for security.

Nobody answered.

He had dismissed them himself.

The irony was almost perfect.

Another knock echoed through the manor.

Then a voice came through the hallway.

“Evelyn?”

I recognized it instantly.

My father had arrived.

Nathan’s confidence finally cracked.

But before I could answer, Celeste whispered something that made me stop.

“Nathan.”

He looked at her.

“You never told her about Malcolm, did you?”

My father stepped into the room at that exact moment.

His face changed.

“Malcolm?”

Celeste looked directly at him.

“Malcolm Shaw.”

My father went completely still.

Malcolm Shaw had been his closest friend for thirty-two years.

May you like

And according to the recording inside my pendant, Malcolm had been helping Nathan from the beginning.
