Chapter 17 - THE SHIPPING TERMINAL

The old Ashford shipping terminal had been closed for eleven years.

It sat along the Hudson behind warehouses nobody used anymore.

Theodore confirmed Charles once owned a private office there.

Detective Cole obtained a warrant.

My father wanted to go.

I wanted to go too.

Cole refused.

“This is now a law enforcement operation.”

For once, I agreed.

We waited at Hartwell headquarters.

At 4:07 p.m., Cole’s team entered the terminal.

At 4:13, they found the office.

At 4:18, they found the servers.

Charles was gone.

But he had left in such a hurry that several machines were still running.

At 4:21, Adrian received remote access to a forensic copy.

The transfer clock showed nine minutes remaining.

Security phrase required.

Three failed attempts.

Then a fourth request appeared.

My father frowned.

“He is trying again.”

I looked at the screen.

This time, the system displayed a new message.

AUTHORIZED TRUSTEE OVERRIDE REQUEST.

Adrian became pale.

“That should not be possible.”

“Who can authorize it?”

He searched the trust structure.

Only one person.

The independent trustee.

Claire Donovan.

I called her immediately.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

My stomach tightened.

Dad called Claire’s office.

Her assistant answered.

Claire had left twenty minutes earlier after receiving an urgent message supposedly from me.

I stood.

“I never contacted her.”

Adrian tracked her company phone.

It was moving toward downtown Manhattan.

Detective Cole was notified.

Then my phone rang.

Claire.

I answered.

“Where are you?”

Her voice was calm.

“Walking back to my office.”

“What happened?”

“Someone sent me a message saying you needed me at the courthouse.”

“Was anyone there?”

“No.”

I closed my eyes.

Charles had only needed Claire away from her secure terminal.

Adrian checked the trust system.

Trustee override was now active.

“How?”

Then he understood.

“Her office computer.”

Someone had entered while Claire was gone.

Theodore stood.

“Charles has an insider.”

A new authorization appeared.

TRUSTEE CONFIRMATION ACCEPTED.

My father looked at the clock.

Six minutes.

Facial confirmation accepted.

Voice confirmation accepted.

Trustee override accepted.

Only the final transfer remained.

Adrian typed desperately.

“I can suspend the reserve if I find the emergency clause.”

I remembered my mother’s recording.

Never hide a key where someone expects a key.

Hide it inside a memory.

“Blue Winter.”

Adrian looked at me.

“What?”

“The trust has a contingency password.”

I typed it.

A hidden menu appeared.

EMERGENCY BENEFICIARY LOCK.

Adrian stared.

“Your mother built a kill switch.”

The countdown reached forty seconds.

I clicked LOCK.

The screen froze.

Then one word appeared.

DENIED.

Across New York, Charles Ashford’s twenty-two-year plan collapsed in a single second.

But Detective Cole called immediately afterward.

“We found Charles.”

I stood.

“Where?”

Her answer stunned me.

May you like

“He is inside Hartwell headquarters.”
