Chapter 11 - THE FINAL AMENDMENT

Federal agents stopped Dr. Rainer before his flight departed.

He did not resist.

According to Detective Cole, he immediately requested an attorney.

More importantly, agents recovered a laptop.

Inside were scans of documents connected to my mother’s trust.

One was dated four days before her death.

My father read the document silently.

Then he handed it to me.

The amendment contained a clause none of us had seen.

If Charles Ashford or any descendant attempted to gain control of Ashford Maritime through marriage, fraud, coercion, or concealed identity, all ownership rights would transfer permanently to me.

Nathan stared at the document.

“That is not valid.”

Adrian looked at him.

“It was notarized.”

“By a corrupt doctor.”

“Which still creates a significant legal problem for you.”

Nathan looked toward Malcolm.

“You said that amendment was destroyed.”

Malcolm did not answer.

Dad turned.

“You destroyed my wife’s documents?”

“I destroyed one copy.”

“Why?”

Malcolm’s voice became low.

“Charles threatened my family.”

Dad stared at him.

“So you betrayed mine.”

Malcolm looked down.

There was no defense.

I kept reading.

The final page contained another clause.

If I died before receiving full control, the assets would transfer to a charitable foundation.

Not Nathan.

Not any future husband.

Not even my father.

I looked up.

Nathan knew that too.

Suddenly the years of manufactured medical records became even darker.

He could not simply inherit everything.

He needed me alive long enough to sign.

Then disposable afterward.

I refused to imagine what that might have meant.

Dad seemed to understand anyway.

He stepped toward Nathan.

Detective Cole quietly moved between them.

Nathan laughed.

“You think I intended to kill her?”

Nobody answered.

“That is ridiculous.”

I looked at him.

“Then why did you prepare documents claiming I needed long-term institutional care?”

Nathan’s smile vanished.

Cole turned toward him.

“What documents?”

Adrian searched the recovered files.

There they were.

A private facility in Switzerland.

An admission request.

My name.

My personal information.

A planned arrival date.

Sunday.

Three days away.

Celeste covered her mouth.

Nathan stared at the screen.

I felt the room tilt beneath me.

He had intended to send me away.

Then claim I had suffered another breakdown.

My father whispered, “You were going to make my daughter disappear.”

Nathan finally lost control.

“She was supposed to sign first.”

Silence followed.

Nathan realized what he had admitted.

Detective Cole looked at him.

“Thank you.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

May you like

And somewhere deep inside me, the final piece of our marriage died.
